MUMBAI, NOV 24

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, revered as the He-Man of Indian Cinema, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 89. The legendary star had been discharged from Breach Candy Hospital on November 12 after treatment for a critical health condition, but his health had remained fragile.

Dr. Rajiv Sharma of Breach Candy Hospital earlier confirmed that Dharmendra was “fully satisfied” with his treatment and had been taken home in a stable condition. He also urged fans not to spread misinformation and instead pray for the actor’s recovery. Dharmendra had been placed under strict medical observation since October 31 and was briefly on life support on November 10.

The actor, born on December 8, 1935, was just weeks away from his 90th birthday.

Dharmendra’s Last Films and Upcoming Projects

Dharmendra was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.

He was also set to appear in Sriram Raghavan’s upcoming war drama Ikkis, featuring Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia, based on the life of Param Vir Chakra recipient Arun Khetarpal. The film includes Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikandar Kher and is slated for a December release.

A Filmography That Shaped Indian Cinema

With a career spanning over six decades and more than 300 films, Dharmendra remains one of the most successful, loved and iconic actors in Bollywood history. He holds the record for appearing in the maximum number of hit films in Hindi cinema.

He made his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and delivered early hits like:

  • Ayee Milan Ki Bela
  • Phool Aur Patthar
  • Aaye Din Bahar Ke

Throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s, he starred in a long list of blockbusters, including:

  • Ankhen
  • Shikar
  • Jeevan Mrityu
  • Mera Gaon Mera Desh
  • Seeta Aur Geeta
  • Jugnu
  • Yaadon Ki Baaraat
  • Dost
  • Sholay
  • Pratiggya
  • Charas
  • Dharam Veer
  • Ghulami
  • Hukumat
  • Aag Hi Aag

His powerful yet relatable screen presence also shone in acclaimed films like Anupama, Bandini, Satyakam, Naya Zamana, Chupke Chupke, Dillagi, and The Burning Train.

In later years, he transitioned to character and ensemble roles in hits such as Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Life in a… Metro, Johnny Gaddaar, Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.

Awards and Legacy

Dharmendra was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2012, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
Often called Bollywood’s most handsome superstar, his charm, versatility and mass appeal made him a pan-Indian favourite whose legacy spans generations.

With his passing, Indian cinema bids farewell to an icon whose films, charisma and contribution to Bollywood remain unparalleled.
