DMK General Secretary and senior most leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) K. Anbazhagan (98) died in the wee hours on Saturday (March 7, 2020).
Close friend of the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, was a four-time Minister in the state cabinet. He held the post of party’s General Secretary for 43 years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
He was elected to the state assembly for seven terms from 1957 and was elected as Member of Parliament once. He was ailing from the first week of January this year due to age-related complications. He was admitted to the Apollo hospital on February 24 for breathing problem and age-related complications, since then he was critical.
In a statement issued here, the DMK president M.K. Stalin has announced mourning for a week when party flags will fly half-mast.
An academician turned politician, Mr. Anbazhagan first became the general secretary of the DMK in May 1977. He continued hold the position till his death. He was also the first secretary of the DMK’s trade union movement. DMK President M.K. Stalin, MP Kanimozhi and other senior leaders rushed to the hospital.
TUJ condoles the death
In a statement, the state president of the Tamil Nadu Union of Journalists D.S.R. Subash has condoled the death of DMK General Secretary Anbazhagan.
