Tamil Nadu’s already surcharged political landscape witnessed another dramatic escalation on Monday after DMK MLA G.V. Markandeyan was arrested for allegedly making threatening and defamatory remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, triggering protests by his supporters and setting off a fresh war of words between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the principal Opposition, the DMK. Police officials said the Vilathikulam legislator was taken into custody from his residence early on Monday following a complaint lodged by a TVK functionary over remarks allegedly made during a public meeting in Kovilpatti. Videos of the speech had circulated widely on social media, prompting the police to initiate legal action.
As police arrived at his residence, DMK workers and supporters staged a protest, raising slogans against the arrest and attempting to prevent the police vehicle from leaving. The police dispersed the protesters before taking the MLA for questioning. He was later formally arrested and is expected to be produced before a competent court.
Government’s Stand
The ruling TVK maintained that the action was based on a police complaint and legal provisions, asserting that any alleged threat or inflammatory remark directed at a constitutional functionary must be investigated in accordance with law. Government sources indicated that the police acted on the basis of the complaint received and that the investigation would proceed independently.
DMK Hits Back
The DMK strongly criticised the arrest, describing it as an instance of political intimidation and alleging that the Vijay government was increasingly using police action to target Opposition leaders. The party has, in recent weeks, repeatedly accused the ruling dispensation of attempting to suppress dissent and manufacture political controversies against its leaders.
Supporters of the MLA echoed similar sentiments during the protest, alleging selective action against Opposition voices while demanding his immediate release.
Other Political Reactions
The arrest comes amid intensifying confrontation between the ruling TVK and Opposition parties over several issues, including recent corruption allegations, the Palani Mutt land controversy and law-and-order incidents.
The AIADMK has, in recent days, criticised the Vijay government on governance-related issues, while also demanding transparency and accountability in politically sensitive matters.
The Congress, while maintaining its criticism of political polarisation, has recently acknowledged some governance initiatives of the Vijay government, with senior leader P. Chidambaram comparing its anti-corruption drive to the Kamaraj era, even as the party continues to advocate democratic functioning and due process.
Political observers believe the arrest is likely to further sharpen the confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition, with both sides expected to use the issue to consolidate their respective political narratives ahead of future electoral battles.
The police have not disclosed additional details regarding the specific charges beyond confirming that the case pertains to the alleged threatening remarks made by the legislator during the public meeting. The investigation is continuing.
