The principal opposition party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Sunday announced that its general council would meet on March 29 to elect the successor to party general secretary K Anbhazhagan, who passed away recently.
In a statement, DMK chief M K Stalin said the general council, party’s powerful decision-making body, was scheduled to be held under his leadership on March 29 at Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters.
All the general council members are asked to take part without fail, he said. Anbazhagan(97), a close confidant of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi died on March 7 following a brief illness.
He was the senior-most leader in the party after the death of DMK patriarch Karunanidhi in August 2018. Known as ‘Perasiriyar’ (professor) in DMK circles, he has been the party’s general secretary for the last 43 years.
