The participants carried placards with awareness messages of importance of daily exercise and no to self medication.
Later addressing the reporters, Dr Velu said, “The walkathon was organized to create awareness to the people on the evils of self medication and advocating that people should go for medical tests at least once in a year to keep their precious health condition properly. The advent of internet and access to information comes with its own pros and cons. On the one hand, it empowers people and on the other hand, it gives them a false sense of confidence and that they know their best.”
The world we live in has paved the way for a number of complex diseases. It is always better to consult a doctor for even the slightest of issues. rather the self-diagnosing & medicating. Hence, this World Health Day, let us pledge to consult a #DoctorFirst for health problems. pic.twitter.com/HiGBBNQH0g

He also further said, “In the case of health-related matters, they often end up with searching the internet for guidance on diagnosis as well as self medication. This can prove to be detrimental to the people’s health and well-being. While self-diagnosis and self medication may not sound life threatening, it can develop into a serious threat if gone wrong. Hence, the medical fraternity urge the people not to put themselves to the test by self-diagnosis and instead seek the right medical guidance from an expert.”
Dr T Senthamizh Pari, President-elect 2022 of IMA Tamil Nadu chapter said, “People generally prefer self-diagnosis as it can be done easily with the help of the information available over internet. With the self-diagnosis, the people are at the risk of being completely wrong or downplaying the medical condition, if they are experiencing common symptoms. The symptoms experienced are an indicator by our bodies that should not be ignored and needs proper medical attention.”
