Prof Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and Fortis Healthcare Medical Council  said, “Indian made heart valves are no less inferior to the contemporary western ones and this has been proved in the largest pivotal randomised study in the west.”

He said this while delivering Dr. S. Thanikachalam Endowment Oration at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher education and Research here on Saturday.

Speaking on ‘Evolution Of Interventional Cardiology Past, Present And The Future’, he said, “India has been abreast with the west in the progress of various procedures beginning with the balloon and culminating in Trans Aortic Valve Implantation  TAVI and now moving towards other valves.  The biggest challenge for India today is to make the procedures affordable and available to all.  Indian made valves play an important role in this and we need more made in India valves and stents. Some of the pivotal randomised study on these valves done in the west has proved their efficacy.  In some cases these valves are even better because they are available in many sizes and fits into the anatomy better.  The same is true of Indian made stents too.”

Dr. Ashok Seth was presented with the ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ by Dr. Mahesh Vakamudi, Pro Vice Chancellor, SRIHER, for his pioneering contributions, for which he has been recognised as  the first Indian master interventionalist  of the society for cardiovascular angiography and interventions.

A two-day cardiology update is being held alongside in which over 400 physicians and cardiologists from all over India are attending to hone their skills.
