Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has resigned as governor of Telangana and as the Lt Governor of Puducherry, amid speculations that she might contest the Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate from Tamil Nadu. She has sent her resignation to the President Draupadi Murmu’s office in Rashtrapathi Bhavan.
Her resignation came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Hyderabad. She is likely to visit Chennai later in the evening today.
Soundararajan, who was the BJP chief in Tamil Nadu till 2019, had expressed her intention to reenter electoral politics recently. Last month, during an event in Puducherry, Tamilisai opened up about her desire to be a people’s representative.
“My desire is to be a people’s representative but I will abide by the decision of the PM and home minister,” she said at a press conference at Raj Nivas organised on her completion of three years in the office.
Soundararajan would have completed five year’s in office as Telangana governor in September this year and the decision to submit resignation has triggered speculations about her political aspirations.
Before being appointed a governor, Soundararajan was a BJP leader for over two decades. She is the daughter of veteran Congressman Kumari Ananthan and hails from the influential Nagar community.
Speculations are that she is likely to contest from Central Chennai or Puducherry as a BJP candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Her resignation comes amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stay in Telangana.
