In order to raise awareness about recognizing hearing loss and prompt treatment, an awareness program was conducted on Sunday at Mylapore here, which was attended by several children, who have undergone cochlear implant and others had their questions about hearing impairment and the cochlear implant addressed. Dr. Sanjeev Mohanty, Senior Consultant & HOD, ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, MGM Healthcare was one among the chief guest at the event and addressed the audience on early detection of hearing impediment in children.
- It has been observed that, for every 1,000 newborns, three to four have severe to profound hearing loss, while six to seven percent have mild to moderate hearing problems
- Cochlear implants are one of the best options when hearing is impaired by 90% or more

It interferes with the growth of their speech and language, which requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. It has been observed that, for every 1,000 newborns, three to four have severe to profound hearing loss, while six to seven percent have mild to moderate hearing problems. Cochlear implants are one of the best options when hearing is impaired by 90% or more.
Speaking at the occasion Dr. Sanjeev Mohanty, Senior Consultant & HOD, ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, MGM Healthcare, explained, “Hearing disabilities can be caused by genetic issues, poor nutrition during pregnancy, frequent ear infections, a lack of immunizations, and ongoing exposure to loud noises. As a healthcare practitioner, it is our top priority to raise awareness about the causes and prevention of this illness. Although attempts to reduce the causes of hearing loss can help prevent it, those who currently have hearing loss should also get rehabilitation. Those with mild to moderate hearing loss can benefit from assistive technology like hearing aids, but Cochlear Implants are the greatest solution for both children and adults with profound hearing loss.”
