EC announces bypolls to one parliamentary and six assembly seats on Feb 27

The polls will be held for one assembly seat each in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu and two assembly seats in Maharashtra.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the schedule for bye polls to six assembly seats in five states and a parliamentary constituency in Lakshadweep on February 27.

The polls will be held for one assembly seat each in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu and two assembly seats in Maharashtra.

  • The bye-election was necessitated after former Erode East MLA from Congress E Thirumahan Everaa died due to a cardiac arrest on January 4.
  • The polls will be held to one assembly seat each in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu and two assembly seats in Maharashtra.

“The counting of votes of all the bye-elections will take place on March 2 along with assembly election results of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland,” said chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

The notification for polls in the above-mentioned states will be issued on January 31, whereas as February 7 has been fixed as the last date for filing the nominations.

The CEC informed that parliamentary elections in Lakshadweep are held after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Mohammed Faizal was disqualified.

The Election Commission has announced that the bye-election to the Erode East Assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu will be held on February 27, 2023. The bye-poll was necessitated after former Erode East MLA from Congress E Thirumahan Everaa died due to a cardiac arrest on January 4. The MLA, who was also a part of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), was 46-years-old. Thirumahan was the son of the former TNCC president EVKS Elangovan.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Thirumagan, whose party was in an alliance with the DMK, defeated A Yuvaraj of the Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) who contested the polls on the two-leaves symbol of AIADMK. The DMK-led alliance captured the AIADMK stronghold by a margin of 9,000 votes.

Bye-elections are expected to be conducted within six months of the death or the resignation of the person in power. Candidates will be able to file their nominations for the Erode East bye-poll from January 31 onwards. The last date to file nominations is February 7, and they will be scrutinised on February 8. Candidates have time till February 10 to withdraw their nomination. After the voting on February 27, the votes will be counted on March 2. The date for the results has not been announced yet.Schedule for the bye election is as follows: qualifying dates as 01.01.2023 and updated till last date of making nominations will be used for these elections.

Electoral Rolls

The Electoral Rolls for the aforesaid Assembly Constituencies finally published on 5th January, 2023 with qualifying dates as 01.01.2023 and updated till last date of making nominations will be used for these elections.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) & VVPATs

The Commission has decided to use EVMs and VVPATs in the bye-elections in all the polling stations. Adequate numbers of EVMs and VVPATs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly with the help of these machines.
