To improve the health service in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami laid the foundation stone for the new Government Medical College in Tirupur on Monday.

Laying the foundation stone through video-conferencing from the Secretariat, the Chief Minister said this is part of the state government’s efforts to establish medical colleges in all the 37 districts.
The state government, following the strides of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, got approval for establishing record number of 11 medical colleges – Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Tirupur, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Nagapattinam, Krishnagiri, Tiruvallore, Ariyalur and Kallakkurichi during 2019.
Besides these, the government took the initiative to establish a medical college in Pudukottai during the 2017-18 academic year and another college in Karur during 2019-20. Following this, the IRT Medical College in Perundurai in Erode district was converted as Government Medical College during the last financial year, a release from the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) said.
The new medical college in Tirupur will come up at 11.28 ha land in Nallur village in Tirupur South taluk under the Tirupur Corporation
The institute, with a sanctioned strength of 150 MBBS seats, will be set up with 60 percent central funds, the release added.
The state has a total of 37 districts, including five, which had come into existence recently.
The Tirupur Medical College was being set up at an estimated cost of Rs 336.96 crore, of which the Centre will contribute Rs 196 crore, while the state government will bear Rs. 141.96 crore. The state government has allocated Rs. 100-crore along with administrative sanction on November 12 last year, the release added.
Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Health and Family Welfare Minister C. Vijayabhaskar, Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam, Health and Family Welfare Principal Secretary Beela Rajesh among others were present, the release added.
