Three passengers travelling on Nellai Express, including a BJP worker, were detained with Rs 4.5 crore in cash at Tambaram railway station in Chennai on Saturday.
Following the cash seizure, the Election Commission flying squad officials searched a Chennai hotel owned by BJP leader Nainar Nagendran, the NDA candidate from Tirunelveli. The action came, as one of the three nabbed with the cash was Nagendran’s aide Perumal. It added that the officials searched all the rooms of the hotel in Kilpauk.

The accused, Sathish, a BJP member and a manager of a private hotel, his brother Naveen and one driver, Perumal, were carrying Rs 4.5 crore in six bags. The trio, , identified as S Sathish (33) and his brother S Navin (31) of Chennai, and S Perumal (26) of Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi, were to travel to Tirunelveli by train when the flying squad detained them.
They were taken to Tambaram police station. Further investigations are on to find out the source and purpose of the money.

The ruling DMK on Sunday demanded that election officials must search across all places linked to the Tirunelveli BJP MLA Nainar Nagendran.
DMK organising secretary RS Bharathi, in a representation to Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo, also demanded that all places linked to the BJP candidate contesting across Tamil Nadu must be searched.
Bharathi said, “We suspect Nainar Nagendran stored crores of rupees in secret places, to distribute to the voters. Nagenthran is indulging in large-scale corrupt practices and likewise, the BJP is planning to distribute money to the voters in all constituencies wherever their candidates are contesting.”
According to the police, the trio were identified as Sathish (33), Naveen (26) and Perumal (26). The police said that based on a tip-off, the FST followed the trio from Egmore and nabbed at them Tambaram Railway Station. A police officer said, “The three men had five bags of cash containing Rs 3,98,91,500.
As of 9 am on April 6, the Election Commission and Income Tax officials have seized Rs 82.6 crore cash and precious metals worth Rs 89.4 crore in Tamil Nadu.
