The IJU congratulateed the tribal leader from Odisha getting in to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Her election to the highest office of the country took place 101 years after two tribes people were elected to legislative bodies in colonial India.
“The IJU congratulates the Madam President on her election to the top most post of the country and hopes that she will not forget her bitter struggle as a tribal from the most backward area of Odisha and do her best for the uplift of her community in the country,” say IJU president Br Prajapathi and general secretary G Prabhakaran in a joint statement.
No doubt her election as President should be a milestone in the journey of tribal empowerment. The tribes people are the most marginalized and depressed sections of the Indian society. They have high expectation from Murmu’s rise to the top. But this could be realized by various actions on the empowerment of the millions of tribes people in the country by the Central and State governments.
This is the right moment to pay attention to the concerns of the tribes people across the country. The tribal activists have been raising concern – of a systematic erosion of protections accorded to tribals, harassment and suppression by the police, and a general intolerance to the state towards tribal autonomy. Thus her election as the President has certainly become an inspiration of all the deprived and dis-advantaged section of the society – the women, tribals and the poor sections in our country.
Her election to the top post will become meaningful when the state policy too must bend towards justice and fairness to all.
