CHENNAI, JULY 11
The General Council of the AIADMK held immediately after the Madras High Court gave its nod to conduct General Council meet here on Monday.
The general council has unanimously chose to appoint Edappadi K Palaniswami as the party’s interim general secretary. The move effectively stamped out the party’s earlier dual leadership system of Palaniswami as the party’s joint co-ordinator and O Panneerselvam as the co-ordinator.
A resolution passed by the council and read out by a senior leader of the party said single leadership is the need of the hour to take on the DMK government effectively and prepare the party to come back to power again. Dual leadership has delayed taking of key decisions, it said. “AIADMK general council proposes to abolish posts of coordinator and co-coordinator. Party general council empowered to amend bylaws to abolish posts. Though the two posts have ceased the actions taken by the two leaders in the interim would be valid,” announced former minister RB Udhayakumar on the dais. The general council adopts 16 resolutions which includes abolition of dual leadership of the party.
The general council also urged the Centre to posthumously confer the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, on former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
