Calling for urgent policy reforms to free farmers from outdated and restrictive regulations, Sadhguru on Friday asserted that everything grown on agricultural land must belong to farmers. Addressing a gathering of over 10,000 farmers at a Cauvery Calling seminar on sustainable income through tree-based agriculture in Hosur, he urged the Union Government to amend colonial-era laws that continue to impede farmers’ rights over their own produce.

“Farming should be liberated from Government control,” said Sadhguru, stressing the need to clearly distinguish between produce grown on agricultural land and that grown in forests. “Whatever the farmer grows on his land should belong to the farmer,” he added, urging the Union Agriculture Minister to remove policy roadblocks that prevent farmers from cutting and selling trees cultivated on their own land.

Sadhguru emphasised that farmers should not require permission from any authority to harvest or sell trees grown on their farms, and said this principle must be firmly embedded in government policy. “The British-era law that claims anything found below eight feet of soil belongs to the government must be amended,” he underlined.
Advocating market-driven freedom for cultivators, Sadhguru said, “Farmers should be liberated from all rules. Market rules are the best rules. Let the farmer grow what is best for them, what is most profitable for them, and sell it wherever they want in the world.”
Highlighting unity beyond political differences, Sadhguru noted the presence of representatives from across political parties at the event and said collective commitment could help achieve large-scale transformation. “The purpose of politics is to serve people. When it comes to source of our life, we all should not be differently opinionated…Now all of us are in one stage, on the same page, it is very fortunate.”
During the event, Sadhguru also handed over Save Soil Policy Recommendations to the Union Agriculture Minister and offered support in establishing a collaborative platform involving farmers, global scientists, UN agencies and the Ministry of Agriculture to enable large-scale adoption of tree-based agriculture.
Addressing the gathering, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan lauded Sadhguru for initiating the Cauvery Calling movement and acknowledged its far-reaching impact. He said the tree-based agriculture model promoted by the movement is improving farmer incomes, enhancing groundwater levels and contributing to the rejuvenation of the Cauvery river.
“I express my heartfelt gratitude for Sadhguru’s unparalleled contributions. Particularly, the Cauvery Calling movement initiated by Sadhguru to rejuvenate the lifeline of South India, the Cauvery River, has today grown into a mass movement,” the Minister said.
Impressed by the outcomes achieved so far, the Union Agriculture Minister invited the Cauvery Calling team to share its learnings and experiences with the Ministry, which could help shape a national policy on tree-based agriculture.
The seminar also saw participation from agricultural scientists representing five national research institutions and progressive farmers from four states, who shared high-income tree-crop technologies and real-life success stories.
Cauvery Calling regularly conducts such seminars to promote awareness of the agroforestry model, enabling farmers to interact with experts and successful practitioners. Envisioned by Sadhguru, the movement aims to revitalise the Cauvery River, the lifeline of 8.4 crore people, while strengthening farmer livelihoods by facilitating the planting of 242 crore trees on private farmlands. So far, the initiative has enabled the plantation of 12.8 crore trees and empowered 2.5 lakh farmers to adopt tree-based agriculture.
