NE ENVIRONMENT BUREAU
CHENNAI, MARCH 20

Srinivasan Services Trust (SST), the social arm of TVS Motor Company and Sundaram-Clayton Limited on the occasion of World Sparrow Day on Tuesday announced to continue its efforts towards sparrow conservation.

  • SST had provided us a sparrow nest and the sparrow volunteers helped us locate a suitable spot: Santhoshi, a school student from Moolakaraipatti Ward 10, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nādu
  • With our expanded initiatives this year, we are fostering a sense of community involvement and ownership in sparrow conservation: Swaran Singh, Chairman for SST

SST has expanded its conservation program from the 100 villages last year to 200 additional villages in this financial year in Tamil Nādu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, providing families with thousands of customised nests to create a conducive environment for sparrows. As part of the sparrow conservation programme, SST has been conducting community meetings and rallies with the support of local volunteers and community members to create awareness. Apart from this, SST has organised drawing competitions in schools ensuring awareness starts from an early age. SST has also identified Sparrow Volunteers in villages who will encourage participation from the local communities in conservation initiatives.

Santhoshi, a school student from Moolakaraipatti Ward 10, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nādu  said, “SST had provided us a sparrow nest and the sparrow volunteers helped us locate a suitable spot. Within a few days, we observed sparrows frequenting the nest. I began placing food nearby, slowly they started feeding on it as well. Now, to our delight the sparrows have laid eggs in the nest. It brings me immense happiness to witness this beautiful cycle of life unfolding.”

Krishnaveni, Village Development Officer – SST, Thirukkurungudi, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nādu said, “Previously, it was common to observe the elderly in villages collecting sparrow nests, but now, I predominantly encounter children approaching me for them. This shift fills me with optimism regarding the efficacy of our sparrow conservation initiatives. It indicates that we have succeeded in instilling in their minds the notion that sparrow conservation is important.”

Swaran Singh, Chairman for SST said, “Conserving sparrows is not just a task; it’s a collective responsibility. With our expanded initiatives this year, we are fostering a sense of community involvement and ownership in sparrow conservation. We believe that empowering communities is key to the long-term success of sparrow conservation and SST is committed towards driving this endeavour across key regions.”

SST remains dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity and believes that these grassroots efforts can make a significant difference in sparrow conservation.
