AHMEDABAD, MARCH 30
To ensure mass disinfection due to coronavirus scare, the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre or Kidney Hospital in Ahmedabad has successfully installed ‘Sanitizing Tunnel’ to lessen coronavirus spread through humans, says a top official of the hospital on Monday.

The tunnel equipped with a blower fixed on the ceiling inside a closed chamber ensures continuous spray over a person standing under it for 30 seconds. The misty blow containing non-irritant, alcohol-based liquid disinfectant sterilizes the human body surface, clothes, and objects carried by any person thereby lessen virus impact up to 5 hours.
“We have successfully tested this innovation in India for the first time after we were faced with the challenge to tackle the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Sanitizing Tunnel reduces the potency of the virus to a great extent and disinfects health workers who get inside isolation wards treating immunity compromised patients,” said Dr. Vineet Mishra, Director IKDRC.
He added that initially these tunnels would be installed at the entrance of all Covid-19 isolation wards at Civil Hospital compound in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and in various parts of the state where such isolation wards have started functioning.
The institute authorities are hopeful that this “Sanitizing Tunnel’ would go a long way in disinfecting large gathering of people even after lockdown is lifted. “These tunnels could come handy for disinfecting people in large numbers before they enter into shopping malls, offices, and school premises,” added Dr Mishra.
