Initially around 3,000 cusecs water was released from the reservoir around 11.30 am on Saturday for Kuruvai cultivation a day after the Chief Minister reviewed irrigation works in Cauvery delta districts.
Officials said, the quantum of water discharge would be gradually increased to 10,000 causes by the end of the day.
Officials also claimed that this is the 18th time the sluice gates were opened in scheduled June 12 for irrigation, since the constructions of the reservoir.
Water discharge would benefit about 5.21 lakh acres of cultivable land in Delta districts.
Speaking after the opening the sluice gates of the dam, Stalin said, “The government is keen to increase the net cultivable area every year in the state.”
Our Govt has decided to open the Mettur Dam on 12th June. In this regard, I've written to @gssjodhpur requesting him to advise CWMA to ensure that the monthly schedule fixed by the Hon'ble SC is honored in the quantum of water received at Biligundulu. pic.twitter.com/tFbn0Yx46H

Earlier on Friday, the Chief Minister wrote a DO letter to Union Minister for Jal Shakthi Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to insist Cauvery Water Management Authority to ensure water release from Karnataka as per the monthly schedule fixed by the Supreme Court of India.
“Since delta areas in Tamil Nadu do not benefit from the Southwest monsoon, the Kuruvai crop would be totally dependent on the continuous release of water from Mettur reservoir. Hence, any shortfall in the release of water as per the schedule will severely impact the standing crop as well as commencing and continuing the Samba cultivation, from next month,” the Chief Minister emphasized in his letter to the Union Minister.
CM also requested Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to ensure that Tamil Nadu gets the assured quantum of Cauvery water. “As per Supreme Court judgment, we (Tamil Nadu) are to receive 9.19 TMC of water in June and 31.24 TMC in July. I request you to take necessary steps to advise Cauvery Water Management Authority to ensure the realization of water as per the monthly schedule,” he said in his DO letter.
