FedEx today broke ground on a state-of-the-art fully automated air cargo hub at Navi Mumbai International Airport, marking a defining moment in India’s logistics evolution and reinforcing Western India’s role as a global trade gateway.

Backed by a long-term investment exceeding ₹2,500 crore, the proposed 300,000 sq. ft. facility will serve as a regional consolidation and redistribution hub, enhancing cargo capacity and strengthening India’s connectivity to Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd., the facility will leverage NMIA’s integrated multimodal infrastructure to boost efficiency, speed, and reliability across India’s busiest international trade corridor. The project is expected to generate over 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across logistics, warehousing, transportation, and allied sectors.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior leadership including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam, FedEx Airline CEO Richard Smith, FedEx MEISA President Kami Viswanathan, and AAHL Director Jeet Adani.

Strategic Infrastructure to Elevate India’s Global Trade Competitiveness

Jeet Adani, Director, AAHL, said: “This development reflects NMIA’s long-term vision of building integrated infrastructure that strengthens India’s trade competitiveness. With its proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors and multimodal transport networks, NMIA is uniquely positioned to support high-growth export sectors and enhance Maharashtra’s role as a global logistics gateway.”

The cargo hub’s strategic location near key industrial zones, ports, and transport corridors positions Navi Mumbai as a pivotal node in global supply chains, supporting rapid cargo movement and international trade expansion.

FedEx Strengthens India’s Position in Global Supply Chains

Kami Viswanathan, President, FedEx MEISA, said: “India’s competitiveness in global trade will increasingly depend on the reliability and speed of its logistics infrastructure. Establishing this hub at NMIA allows us to integrate global network strength with India’s fastest-growing trade corridor, providing greater certainty, speed and efficiency to customers.”

The facility will directly embed FedEx’s global logistics network into India’s primary trade corridor, accelerating export-import flows and strengthening international connectivity.

Fully Automated Facility to Transform Cargo Handling and Export Efficiency

Equipped with cutting-edge automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, high-speed screening technology, and dedicated aircraft parking bays, the hub will enable simultaneous handling of inbound and outbound cargo while significantly improving transit times and operational flexibility.

The facility will particularly benefit high-value and time-sensitive sectors such as electronics, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, perishables, and MSME exports, ensuring faster turnaround and enhanced supply chain reliability.

By improving logistics efficiency and reducing transit delays, the hub is also expected to lower logistics costs and strengthen India’s export competitiveness.

Navi Mumbai Airport Emerges as India’s Next-Generation Logistics Gateway

NMIA’s cargo infrastructure will begin with an annual handling capacity of approximately 0.5 million metric tonnes, with phased expansion to 3.25 million metric tonnes at full development, positioning the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as one of India’s most advanced air freight ecosystems.

Building on nearly three decades of FedEx’s presence in India, the new automated cargo hub significantly expands its operational footprint while reinforcing Navi Mumbai International Airport’s role as a critical aviation, logistics, and multimodal trade platform in the global supply chain.

The project represents a major leap forward in India’s ambition to become a global logistics powerhouse, accelerating economic growth, empowering exporters, and strengthening the country’s integration into international trade networks.
