The directorate of elementary education has fixed the fees for Classes V and VIII board examinations.
A circular issued on Wednesday said private school students have to pay Rs. 100 for board exam in Class V and Rs. 200 for Class VIII.
Students from government and government-aided schools and those admitted under RTE quota are exempted from paying the fee.
Board exams for Class VIII will be held from March 30 to April 17 and for Class V from April 15 to 20. The evaluation deadline for Class VIII is April 25 and April 28 for Class V.
Private school associations have opposed the move to collect exam fee from Class V and Class VIII students. “Collecting Rs. 200 will increase burden on parents. Government should bear the cost,” said K R Nandakumar, state secretary of Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary and Matriculation Higher Secondary Schools Association.
