Millets are available in a variety of types, and each has its health benefits. Consuming millets as part of your daily diet is an age-old concept. The population of central and southern India consumed millets daily until the Green Revolution made rice and wheat more accessible and it discouraged farmers from cultivating millets. Therefore, consumption of millets reduced as the produce quantum dipped.
Speaking with navjeevanexpress.com, FICCI FLO National President Ujjawala Singhania said, “Aiming to propagate the use of millets in our daily life and help the millet farmers to increase their income, we are holding a day-long ‘Millet Fest’ for all stakeholders – farmers, housewives, FICCI FLO members and foodies. Over 50 people are attending this fest to have a first-hand knowledge on millets. Some shopkeepers have also put up their stalls to sell snacks made of millets and preservative-free ready-to-cook foods.”
Following the central government’s continuous efforts to get international recognition for the nutrient-rich millets, the UN General Assembly in collaboration with more 70 countries declared the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
On the occasion of Farmers’ Day, on Thursday, the Millet Fest was organized by FICCI FLO Ahmedabad Chapter in association with two celebrity chefs at Kovallam, South Indian restaurant near Iskcon so as to accelerate government’s efforts to spread awareness about the nutritious values of millets.
In the fest, various delicious dishes of nutrition-rich millets were prepared and similarly health benefits of this age-old nutrition-packed wonder crops were also disseminated while encouraging people to incorporating millets in their daily diet.
The fest was attended by FICCI FLO Chairperson Nandita Munshaw and other members of FICCI FLO Ahmedabad where they got to know essential health benefits of millets and also learned how to make delicious millet dishes from the celebrity chefs.
The main objective of the Millet Fest was to include the super grain ‘millets’ in our routine diet as it is a vital source of fibre, vitamins and minerals thereby offering more heath-boosting properties than wheat or rice. The Fest increased public awareness on the health benefits and also encouraged more people to include millets in their routine diet.
