AHMEDABAD, FEB 15
In a transformative push to empower widowed women with financial independence and secure direct benefit transfers, the Gujarat Government’s flagship ‘Ganga Swarupa Arthik Sahay Yojana’—popularly known as the Widow Financial Assistance (WFA) scheme—will now disburse benefits directly into Aadhaar-linked accounts of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).
To ensure seamless implementation, the Department of Posts has launched a special account-opening drive from February 14 to 20 across North Gujarat, covering Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mehesana, Patan, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, and Banaskantha districts.
The scheme, designed to promote financial security, dignity, and self-reliance among widows, marks a major milestone in strengthening financial inclusion and welfare delivery at the grassroots level.
Over 1.47 Lakh Beneficiaries to Benefit from Secure Direct Transfers
Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav stated that 1,47,647 Widow Financial Assistance beneficiaries in the North Gujarat Region are currently receiving assistance through Post Office Savings accounts.
With the transition to Aadhaar-enabled IPPB accounts, financial assistance will now be credited directly through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring faster, transparent, and more secure payments.
He emphasised that beneficiaries currently receiving funds through Post Office Savings accounts can seamlessly migrate to IPPB accounts to continue receiving scheme benefits.
Zero-Balance Accounts and Doorstep Banking Ensure Ease and Accessibility
Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav said: “WFA beneficiaries can contact their nearest Post Office to open an IPPB account. IPPB accounts can also be opened by Postman or Gramin Dak Sevak at the beneficiary’s doorstep as per request.”
He further highlighted the accessibility and convenience of the system, adding:
“These accounts can be opened with zero balance.”
Beneficiaries are required to provide:
- Aadhaar Card
- Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Post Office Savings Account passbook
Once opened, Aadhaar seeding will be completed to enable DBT payments.
Importantly, beneficiaries who already hold IPPB accounts only need Aadhaar seeding to start receiving WFA payments. Additionally, their IPPB account can be linked to existing Post Office Savings accounts, enabling access to combined banking and savings benefits.
Special Drive to Reach Every Eligible Beneficiary
As part of the outreach initiative, postal staff—including Postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks—are actively assisting beneficiaries, even visiting homes upon request, ensuring no eligible woman is left behind.
Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Ahmedabad City Division, Chirag Mehta, informed: “A total of 33,990 WFA beneficiaries in Ahmedabad are currently receiving financial assistance through Post Office accounts.”
He added that beneficiaries facing any issues in opening IPPB accounts can contact 8210608040 for assistance and prompt resolution.
Strengthening Financial Independence and Social Security
By integrating welfare payments with IPPB’s digital and doorstep banking ecosystem, the initiative ensures:
- Faster and transparent DBT payments
- Financial inclusion for vulnerable women
- Secure Aadhaar-based authentication
- Convenient doorstep banking services
- Enhanced financial independence and empowerment
This landmark initiative reflects Gujarat’s continued commitment to empowering widows with dignity, financial stability, and inclusive access to modern banking infrastructure—transforming welfare delivery into a catalyst for social and economic resilience.
