Following their arrival, the students visited IIT Madras, where the Governor of Tamil Nadu Ravi interacted with them, emphasising the deep historical, spiritual and cultural links between Kashi and Tamil Nadu. He spoke about the relevance of such exchange programmes in nurturing national integration and fostering respect for India’s diverse traditions and languages.
Learning Tamil Through Living Culture
This is the first time such a large group of students from Kashi has travelled to South India as part of a structured cultural and educational exchange. Over the course of the programme, students will study the Tamil language, literature, culture, traditions and education system, while also visiting iconic temples, heritage sites and premier institutions across South India.
IIT Madras officials noted that both Kashi and Tamil Nadu have been cradle regions of ancient Indian civilisation, adding that such journeys go beyond textbooks by enabling students to experience language and culture in everyday life, thereby strengthening the unity and integrity of the nation.
Students Share Their Experience
The students expressed excitement and gratitude for the warm reception. Many said the lush landscapes, architectural splendour of temples and exposure to Tamil language and traditions made the experience deeply enriching and memorable.
The 300 students have been divided into 10 groups and will spend 10 days travelling across South India, staying at universities and cultural centres. The programme will culminate with a visit to Rameswaram, symbolically linking the spiritual geography of Kashi and Tamil Nadu.
Newton, a Sanskrit student from BHU, said, “This journey has been a great learning experience. Understanding South India’s temples, culture and the Tamil language so closely makes the confluence of Kashi and Tamil Nadu truly unforgettable.”
Badal, a PhD scholar, said, “Kashi Tamil Sangamam gives a real sense of unity in diversity. The education system, language and traditions here offer a new perspective, and this journey will be a milestone in our academic and cultural growth.”
Building a Cultural Bridge Between North and South
The Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 programme stands as a powerful reminder that India’s diversity is its greatest strength. By bringing students face-to-face with living traditions, languages and histories, the initiative is nurturing informed, culturally sensitive citizens and reinforcing the enduring bridge between Kashi and Tamil Nadu—two timeless pillars of India’s civilisation.
