NE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY BUREAU

GANDHINAGAR, SEPT 28

What if the next breakthrough in mobility is born not on an automobile assembly line, but in a laboratory—where advanced materials meet sensors, where radar meets artificial intelligence, and where students work alongside engineers to solve problems that could eventually transform how people and goods move?

That possibility has acquired a new institutional platform with the signing of a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited (SRDI), the research and development arm of Suzuki Motor Corporation in India.

The partnership brings advanced materials, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), sensing, safety, connectivity and energy-efficiency technologies into a common innovation conversation, with particular relevance to Suzuki’s evolving micro-mobility initiatives.

More importantly, it seeks to build a bridge between academic research and industrial application, creating avenues for joint research, student projects, internships, recruitment, technical workshops, skill development and engagement with start-ups through IITGN’s Research Park.

The real experiment: Turning research into mobility

The significance of the collaboration lies not merely in the technologies listed in the MoU, but in the possibility of connecting them.

For mobility systems of the future, materials, sensors, safety architecture and connectivity cannot operate as isolated technologies. They increasingly need to work together to make vehicles and mobility platforms lighter, safer, more energy-efficient, connected and adaptable.

Prof Amit Prashant, Dean, External Relations, IIT Gandhinagar, said, “The future of mobility will be shaped not just by vehicles themselves, but by the technologies behind them, from advanced materials and sensing to safety and connectivity.”

He said the collaboration could enable students and researchers to understand how ideas move from laboratories towards real-world challenges and applications.

“For our students and researchers, the opportunity is to see how ideas move from the lab to address real-world challenges and applications,” Prof Prashant said, adding that the partnership could create new possibilities for students, researchers and IITGN’s start-up ecosystem.

Suzuki’s micro-mobility connects with Gujarat’s innovation ecosystem

The partnership arrives at an interesting moment in Suzuki’s India technology journey.

Earlier this year, SRDI established its Suzuki e-Micromobility Innovation Lab for Ecosystem (SMILE) at the International Automobile Centre of Excellence (iACE) in Gujarat. The platform was created to connect Suzuki’s micro-electric mobility technology with Indian start-ups, component manufacturers and other ecosystem partners.

The IITGN partnership could therefore add another dimension to an emerging Gujarat-based innovation landscape—linking academic research, industrial R&D, start-ups and mobility applications.

Suzuki describes SRDI as a unit focused on automotive research, IT and product development, with technology interests spanning electrification, connected vehicles, data analytics, alternative fuels and low-carbon technologies.

Friction: The small force with a big energy consequence

One of the striking research interests identified by Suzuki is friction reduction.

Taku Sumino, Executive General Manager, Technology Strategy, Suzuki R&D Center India Private Limited, said, “Through this partnership, Suzuki will advance technological research and development, as well as talent exchange, with IIT Gandhinagar.”

Highlighting his particular focus on friction reduction technologies, Sumino said they could contribute to higher fuel efficiency and greater electric efficiency, bringing Suzuki closer to its objective of minimising energy consumption.

The emphasis is significant because energy efficiency is increasingly becoming a central engineering challenge across both conventional and electrified mobility.

Reducing energy losses—even through seemingly small engineering interventions—can have implications for efficiency, operating costs and sustainability when translated across large mobility systems.

The classroom becomes an R&D floor

For IITGN students, perhaps the most tangible dimension of the MoU is the opportunity to move beyond conventional classroom learning.

The agreement provides a framework for exploring internships, project-based engagements and recruitment opportunities with SRDI and the wider Suzuki group. It also envisages skill-development and capability-building initiatives involving students, researchers and engineers.

That could create a valuable feedback loop: a student problem becomes a research project; the research project becomes a prototype; the prototype attracts industrial attention; and industrial requirements, in turn, influence the next generation of academic research.

Such pathways are increasingly important as industries seek engineers who can move comfortably between theoretical understanding and real-world technological constraints.

Research park meets industry

The partnership also opens a door to IITGN’s wider innovation ecosystem.

Through the Institute’s Research Park, incubation and start-up network, the two organisations will explore co-creation programmes, workshops and collaborations around emerging technologies.

The MoU may also facilitate:

  • Joint and sponsored research projects
  • Exchange of scientific and technical information
  • Technical workshops and expert discussions
  • Industrial visits
  • Faculty and researcher engagement
  • Interactions with engineers and industry experts
  • Student projects, internships and recruitment
  • Start-up and incubation ecosystem engagement

This model echoes IITGN’s broader effort to deepen industry-linked research. In 2026, the Institute launched research-cluster initiatives spanning areas including advanced materials, energy, healthcare and emerging technologies, explicitly positioning industry collaboration as a route to translating research into industrial and societal impact.

No promises, but a broader technology canvas

Importantly, the three-year MoU is a framework for collaboration rather than a commitment to any single project.

The agreement carries no financial commitment at this stage. Specific research projects, funding arrangements, deliverables and other commercial or technical terms would be established separately wherever required.

That distinction makes the MoU less about announcing an immediate product and more about creating the institutional architecture from which future technologies could emerge.

And that may ultimately be its most consequential feature.

The road ahead may begin in the lab

Micro-mobility is rapidly expanding beyond the conventional idea of the automobile. Electric platforms, compact mobility systems, connected infrastructure, autonomous or assisted functions and specialised industrial mobility are opening new engineering questions.

Suzuki’s existing SMILE initiative in Gujarat reflects its effort to develop an ecosystem around versatile micro e-mobility, including applications in areas such as industrial operations, warehousing, air cargo and other infrastructure environments.

The IITGN partnership brings another ingredient into that ecosystem: deep academic research.

If successfully translated into projects, the collaboration could place students and researchers closer to the front line of questions that will define tomorrow’s mobility—from how materials behave and sensors perceive, to how vehicles consume energy, communicate and remain safe.

The bigger story, therefore, is not simply an MoU between an IIT and an automobile R&D centre.

It is an attempt to shorten the distance between the laboratory, the engineer, the start-up and the road—and make the next generation of mobility a product of collaboration rather than a solitary invention.
