In a transformative step toward strengthening tourism security, Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU), in collaboration with the Government of Assam, has successfully trained 155 police officers to modernise tourism policing across the state.

The specialised programme, conducted at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, saw 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 123 Sub-Inspectors undergo rigorous capacity-building aligned with global “Smart Policing” standards.

Blending law, technology & human touch

Designed to address the evolving and multifaceted demands of modern tourism, the curriculum combined legal expertise, technological proficiency and soft-skill development.

Officers received training on critical legal frameworks including the Foreigners Act, tourist rights, and the latest provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The programme also integrated IT-enabled tools and digital applications to streamline assistance for both international and domestic travellers.

Participants engaged in interactive, scenario-based discussions, role-playing exercises and complex case simulations to prepare for real-world tourist safety challenges. Sessions extended to stress management, nutrition strategies and psychological resilience, ensuring officers are equipped to operate effectively in high-pressure tourism zones.

The training placed strong emphasis on cultural sensitivity, conflict resolution and emergency response — preparing officers not just as enforcers of law, but as ambassadors of Assam’s hospitality ethos.

Governance with a global outlook

During the valedictory session, officials deliberated on the “way forward,” focusing on integrating these specialised tourism policing units into Assam’s long-term security infrastructure.

With Assam serving as the gateway to Southeast Asia and the principal hub of India’s North-East, the initiative arrives at a critical juncture. As investments expand across semiconductor, industrial and tourism sectors, ensuring a secure and welcoming environment has become central to sustaining investor confidence and tourist satisfaction.

The collaboration between RRU and Assam Police sets a new benchmark in governance and police reform, reinforcing the state’s ambition to emerge as a safe, globally competitive tourism destination.
