Gujarat’s five-decade-long journey of friendship with Japan—rooted in trust, industry and cultural exchange—reached a historic milestone as the Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Gujarat (IJFA) launched its Golden Jubilee Celebrations, GOLDFEST 2026, reaffirming the state’s pioneering vision of becoming the “Mini-Japan of India.”
The celebrations gained global resonance with the visit of high-level delegations from Shizuoka Prefecture and Hamamatsu City, reinforcing Gujarat’s growing stature as Japan’s most trusted partner state in India for manufacturing, innovation and cultural diplomacy.

Japanese Delegations Reinforce Strategic Partnership
The Japanese delegation was led by Hiraki Sho, Vice Governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, and Yusuke Nakano, Mayor of Hamamatsu City, who joined the celebrations to commemorate:
- 50 years of IJFA Gujarat
- First anniversary of the Gujarat–Shizuoka Sister State Partnership
- First anniversary of the Hamamatsu–Ahmedabad Sister City Partnership
- Signing of an MoU for Economic Cooperation between Hamamatsu Chamber of Commerce & Industry (HCCI) and Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI)
A formal Golden Jubilee Welcome Reception at Ahmedabad Management Association brought together diplomats, industrial leaders, policymakers and cultural ambassadors, underlining the depth of Indo-Japan cooperation.

Among the distinguished attendees were Sujan Chinoy, Koji Yagi, Kinji Saito, Kaoru Saito, Masato Oshiki, Taketoshi Yamamoto, Taichi Okamoto, Binay Kumar, Mukesh Patel, Yatindra Sharma and Mohal Sarabhai, reflecting the powerful convergence of diplomacy, industry and people-to-people ties.
Matcha, Mindfulness and the Spirit of Shizuoka
To mark the first anniversary of the Gujarat–Shizuoka partnership, IJFA Gujarat hosted O-Cha Utsav, celebrating Japan’s revered green tea tradition. A specially curated Matcha Cake and authentic Sencha tea ceremony symbolised the cultural bridge between Shizuoka’s tea heritage and Gujarat’s hospitality.

Vice Governor Hiraki Sho said, “The initiative aims to raise awareness about incorporating green tea into daily diets to promote holistic health and living.”
MoU Signals New Economic Momentum
In a major commercial milestone, HCCI and GCCI signed an MoU for Economic Cooperation, formalising a long-term framework for trade, technology exchange and MSME collaboration between Gujarat and Japan.
Kaoru Saito, Chairman of HCCI, and Rajesh Gandhi, Senior Vice President of GCCI, said, “The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry represents Gujarat, one of India’s leading industrial and entrepreneurial states, while the Hamamatsu Chamber of Commerce and Industry stands as a cornerstone of Japan’s industrial innovation within Shizuoka Prefecture.”

Music as Cultural Diplomacy
With Hamamatsu recognised as Asia’s first UNESCO Creative City of Music, the GOLDFEST Concert – Sangeet Symphony (Nihon-no-Ongaku) became a stirring celebration of cultural harmony.
Internationally acclaimed Yamaha brand ambassadors Nandini Shankar, Nise Meruno, Dipanjan Chatterjee, and Japanese saxophonist Shigenobu Namikawa—who performed a tribute blending the Indian and Japanese national anthems—captivated audiences. Fusion performances by artists from Panam Shroff Academy of Music and Khandekars School of Music added depth to the evening.

Tomorrow’s Highlight: PATANG-O-DORI on Uttarayan
The Golden Jubilee celebrations will culminate on Wednesday, January 14, with the iconic PATANG-O-DORI (Japanese Kite Flying Demonstration) from 10 am to noon at Shreyas Foundation, marking both Uttarayan 2026 and the first anniversary of the Hamamatsu–Ahmedabad Sister City Partnership.
A 15-member expert kite-flying team from Hamamatsu—the Kite Capital of Japan—will showcase traditional Japanese techniques using massive three-metre Tako kites, accompanied by bugles, dancers in Happy Coats, and Gujarati folk performers, celebrating the theme “Dancing in the Sky with Amdavadi Patang.”
Distinguished guests include Sujan Chinoy, Hiraki Sho, Yusuke Nakano, Pratibha Jain, Koji Yagi, Umang Thakkar and Abhay Mangaldas.
A Golden Bridge Between Gujarat and Japan
Inspired by the Honorary Consulate of Japan in Ahmedabad, GOLDFEST 2026 stands as a powerful testament to five decades of trust, investment, cultural respect and shared aspirations, reinforcing Gujarat’s role as Japan’s most enduring partner in India.
