From Mumbai applause to Gujarat’s heart: ‘Mere Krishn’ set to turn stage into a living sanctum

  • 20 grand scenes, 130+ artists & a sweeping mythic canvas come alive

  • Star cast reveals the emotional, spiritual & theatrical depths
  • Why live theatre still triumphs in the age of OTT storytelling

GOWRI MANICKAVASAGAM

After enthralling audiences in Mumbai, the monumental theatrical spectacle “Mere Krishn” is now set to sweep across Gujarat—opening in Ahmedabad on March 28–29 before travelling to Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and returning to Ahmedabad over a three-month cultural odyssey.

What arrives is not merely a stage production, but a living, breathing epic—where devotion meets design, mythology meets modernity, and theatre transforms into transcendence.

When Krishna speaks anew: A Timeless soul, a contemporary voice

Headlining the production, Sourabh Raaj Jain offers a deeply introspective take on the eternal icon: “Krishna has been portrayed countless times, but ‘Mere Krishn’ explores his inner stillness—his silences, his dilemmas, his compassion. We bring out a Krishna who is not just divine, but profoundly human in guiding us through moral complexity.”

Radha & Mahamaya: Two dimensions, one powerful presence

Pooja Sharma takes on a striking double role—as Radha and Mahamaya, bringing layered depth to the narrative: “Radha here is not just Krishna’s beloved—she is his energy, his mirror, his universe. The play explores her as a powerful spiritual force that completes Krishna, making their bond deeply philosophical and universal.”

Her portrayal of Mahamaya adds another dimension—symbolising the cosmic force that shapes destiny—making her dual performance both emotionally rich and spiritually profound.

Villains with depth: Kans & Duryodhan reimagined

For Arpit Ranka, playing dual antagonists is a psychological journey: “Kans is driven by fear and prophecy—there’s paranoia in his tyranny. Duryodhan, on the other hand, is pride and entitlement. Their body language, voice, even their silences are crafted differently to reflect these mindsets.”

The mythic arc: Devotion meets dramatic innovation

Director Rajiiv Singhh Dinkaar explains the creative vision: “We’ve created a ‘mythic arc’—a seamless journey from Krishna’s life stories to his role in the Mahabharata. The challenge was to balance devotion with contemporary storytelling, so audiences feel both reverence and relatability.”

Scripting the eernal: Philosophy for today’s world

Writer Dr Naresh Katyayan shares: “Krishna’s philosophy is timeless, but its expression must evolve. We’ve reinterpreted his teachings in a way that resonates with today’s dilemmas—without diluting the spiritual essence.”

A grand canvas: Scale, sound & spectacle

Producer Vivek Gupta promises an unforgettable visual feast: “Ahmedabad will witness a truly grand theatrical experience—massive sets, intricate choreography, cinematic lighting, and soul-stirring music. It’s designed to immerse every sense.”

Theatre vs OTT: Why live still wins

The team collectively reflects on the power of stage: “In an OTT era, live theatre offers something irreplaceable—shared energy, real-time emotion, and a deep emotional connect that no screen can replicate. ‘Mere Krishn’ is meant to be felt, not just watched.”

Behind the curtain: The human effort of the divine

The cast opens up on the demands of the production: “Portraying revered characters is both physically and emotionally intense. With multiple shows and elaborate sequences, it requires discipline, devotion, and deep internalisation of the roles.”

Krishna today: Divine, strategist or guide?

The creators emphasise a balanced portrayal: “Krishna is shown as all three—divine, strategist, and human guide. This balance is crucial today, because audiences seek not just miracles, but meaning and direction.”

The takeaway: A message beyond the stage

Dignitaries and creators echo a unified vision: “We want audiences to leave with inner peace, clarity, and a renewed sense of purpose—just as Arjuna did. If even one person finds guidance through this play, our purpose is fulfilled.”

A touring epic: Gujarat awaits the divine

With 130+ cast and crew, supported by 40 local talents, the production is among the most ambitious in Indian theatre today. Across 20 visually stunning scenes, it captures Krishna’s journey—from playful divinity to profound philosopher of the Mahabharata.

Backed by music from Udbhav Ojha and voices of celebrated singers like Shaan, Palak Muchhal, and Javed Ali, the play becomes a multi-sensory spiritual odyssey.
