From the laboratories of physics and chemistry to the frontiers of biology and the abstract universe of mathematics, India’s Yuva Shakti has delivered a spectacular 2026 Olympiad campaign, winning 12 Gold and 7 Silver medals across the International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematical Olympiads.

The campaign reached a historic high with all five Indian participants winning Gold in Physics and all four participants winning Gold in Chemistry, earning India Joint World No. 1 honours in both disciplines.

The remarkable performances in Biology and Mathematics further strengthened India’s position among the world’s leading scientific and mathematical talent pools.

International Mathematical Olympiad 2 Gold, 4 Silver

Competing against the finest young minds from across the globe, Indian students demonstrated extraordinary scientific aptitude, perseverance, creativity and problem-solving ability.

The 2026 campaign has emerged as a landmark chapter in India’s Olympiad journey, showcasing the extraordinary potential of the country’s young scientific talent and the growing strength of the national ecosystem nurturing it.

DAE’S FOUR-DECADE TALENT PIPELINE DELIVERS GLOBAL RESULTS

The achievements reflect the strength of India’s National Olympiad Programme in science and mathematics, spearheaded by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and an aided institution under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

For almost four decades, the DAE has provided the institutional foundation for identifying, mentoring and preparing India’s brightest young minds for the world’s most prestigious science and mathematics competitions.

The DAE’s contribution extends far beyond financial support. Through its sustained backing of TIFR and HBCSE, it has helped build a national ecosystem bringing together scientists, teachers, academic institutions and subject experts in a common mission—to identify talent early, nurture it rigorously and inspire the next generation of scientific leaders.

‘A MATTER OF IMMENSE NATIONAL PRIDE’

Congratulating the students on their exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, said:

“The outstanding performances of Indian students at the International Olympiads are a matter of immense national pride and a celebration of India’s scientific spirit. These achievements reflect the dedication of the students, the invaluable guidance of mentors and teachers, and the strength of the institutional ecosystem painstakingly built over decades.”

At the heart of India’s Olympiad success is HBCSE, the national nodal centre for the Science and Mathematical Olympiad Programmes.

HBCSE conducts a rigorous, multi-stage process of talent identification, orientation, advanced training and mentoring, preparing the country’s brightest pre-university students to compete at the highest international level.

Over the years, the programme has evolved into one of the world’s most respected Olympiad ecosystems, supported by the DAE’s sustained institutional commitment to scientific excellence.

‘NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF YOUNG SCHOLARS’

Acknowledging the unstinting support extended by the DAE in nurturing India’s Olympiad programme, Prof. Arnab Bhattacharya, Centre Director, HBCSE, said:

“We are deeply grateful to the Department of Atomic Energy for its invaluable support to HBCSE and for its long-standing commitment to nurturing scientific talent in the country. The outstanding performances of our students reaffirm our mission of identifying, nurturing and inspiring the next generation of young scholars, while fostering a culture of excellence in science and mathematics across the country.”

The 2026 achievements are the result of a collaborative national effort involving Olympiad students, team leaders, mentors, scientific observers, HBCSE Olympiad Cells, teacher organisations and a nationwide network of resource persons.

The Department of Atomic Energy also acknowledged the continued partnership of the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Space and the Ministry of Education, Government of India, whose support has further strengthened the National Olympiad Programme.

The success of India’s Olympiad teams is a powerful reminder that sustained investment in scientific education, talent identification and mentorship can transform raw curiosity into global excellence.

As India advances towards becoming a global knowledge economy, the Olympiad triumphs of 2026 offer a powerful message to millions of young students: the next world-changing scientist, mathematician, innovator or researcher may be sitting in a classroom today—waiting only for the right opportunity, mentor and challenge.

The Department of Atomic Energy remains committed to inspiring young scientific minds, strengthening institutions of excellence and building a future powered by science, innovation and human potential.
