What if an aircraft financing deal could do more than put additional planes into the skies—by also opening a new international funding route for India’s aviation industry? Citi and Credendo, Belgium’s export credit agency, have taken a significant step in that direction with the successful closing of a $328-million financing facility for eight Airbus aircraft for IndiGo, marking two firsts in global aviation finance and India’s emerging aircraft-leasing ecosystem.

The transaction covers six Airbus A321s and two A320s for IndiGo, India’s largest airline by network and fleet size and one of the world’s fastest-growing carriers. Citi acted as Sole Mandated Arranger, ECA Coordinator and Sole Lender, with the financing backed by Credendo’s credit insurance.

Executed through IndiGo subsidiary InterGlobe Aviation Financial Services IFSC Private Limited, the facility marks the world’s first-ever Credendo-insured aviation financing and the first export credit agency-backed aircraft financing structured through a GIFT IFSC leasing platform.

The milestone underscores the growing role of international capital, export credit support and specialised financial structures in funding India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector. It also aligns with the Government of India’s ambition to establish GIFT IFSC as a globally competitive hub for aircraft leasing and financing.

A bespoke funding structure for a growing fleet

The financing solution was jointly conceptualised, structured and developed by Citi and Credendo in close partnership with IndiGo and Airbus. It combines Citi’s expertise in cross-border aviation and export credit agency financing with Credendo’s credit insurance capabilities to provide a tailored funding arrangement supporting IndiGo’s fleet expansion plans through GIFT IFSC.

Airbus played a key role in supporting the transaction, working closely with Citi, Credendo and IndiGo throughout the process.

The aircraft manufacturer’s participation also reflects its commitment to developing innovative financing solutions that widen funding access and support the growth ambitions of its airline customers.

For IndiGo, the facility provides a competitive and diversified source of long-term funding for fleet and network expansion. More broadly, the structure demonstrates how international lenders, export credit agencies, aircraft manufacturers and Indian aviation companies can collaborate to develop new financing pathways.

GIFT IFSC moves into the aviation finance fast lane

K Balasubramanian, India CEO and Banking Head and Indian Subcontinent Sub-Cluster Head at Citi, said the transaction demonstrated the potential of India’s policy-led push to develop aircraft leasing through GIFT City.

“The Government of India has made aircraft leasing through GIFT City a clear policy priority, and the incentives introduced have helped position India as an attractive destination for aircraft leasing. This transaction is a strong example of that vision in action,” he said.

“By combining Citi’s cross-border aviation and ECA financing expertise with Credendo’s credit insurance and IndiGo’s GIFT IFSC platform, we have delivered a first-of-its-kind solution that opens a vital new pathway connecting Indian aviation with the deep pool of ECA-backed international liquidity and supports the next phase of India’s aviation growth.”

Balasubramanian added: “Citi is proud to have led this landmark facility as Sole Mandated Lead Arranger, ECA Coordinator and Sole Lender. We also thank Airbus for its partnership and support in making this transaction possible.”

The transaction highlights the potential of GIFT IFSC to connect India’s aviation market with international financing institutions and export credit agencies. By creating additional funding structures for aircraft acquisition, the platform can broaden the range of options available to airlines seeking to finance fleet growth.

Credendo opens a new chapter in aviation finance

For Credendo, the transaction marks its first aircraft financing deal and an initial step towards a broader initiative to support the Belgian aviation industry in accessing international opportunities.

Frank Vanwingh, Group Deputy CEO and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee at Credendo – Export Credit Agency, said: “This transaction is a significant milestone for Credendo and the first step in a broader initiative aimed at enhancing support for the Belgian aviation industry.”

He added: “As our inaugural aircraft finance transaction, it demonstrates our ambition to become a long-term partner for Belgian aviation stakeholders seeking access to international opportunities and innovative financing structures. The transaction also showcases the value that Belgian export credit support can bring to the aviation sector through bespoke risk mitigation solutions.”

Vanwingh said Credendo was proud to have worked alongside Airbus, Citi and IndiGo to complete the transaction through GIFT IFSC, adding that the agency looked forward to supporting further aviation finance projects worldwide.

The arrangement illustrates how export credit insurance can help mitigate financing risks and facilitate cross-border funding. It also establishes a new reference point for Credendo as it explores opportunities to support aviation-related transactions internationally.

IndiGo sees a new funding route for expansion

Riyaz Peermohamed, Chief Aircraft Acquisition & Financing Officer at IndiGo, said the airline welcomed the collaboration and the funding flexibility it offered for its expanding Airbus fleet.

“We are pleased to partner with Citi, Credendo and Airbus on this landmark financing, which offers IndiGo a competitive source of liquidity for our growing Airbus fleet,” he said.

“The transaction demonstrates the potential of GIFT IFSC to bring together international banks and export credit agencies and create innovative financing solutions for Indian aviation.”

The facility comes against the backdrop of India’s growing air-travel market and airlines’ continuing need to finance aircraft acquisitions, expand networks and manage capital requirements. Access to diversified funding sources is an important consideration for carriers as they scale operations.

A wider horizon for India’s aircraft leasing ambitions

The significance of the Citi-Credendo transaction extends beyond the eight aircraft covered by the facility. Its structure demonstrates a potential route for linking Indian aviation requirements with international lending capacity and export credit support through GIFT IFSC.

For India, the opportunity lies in developing a broader aircraft-leasing ecosystem that can attract international capital, support airline expansion and strengthen the country’s role in global aviation finance.

The deal does not, by itself, establish the scale of future transactions. Its longer-term importance will depend on whether similar structures can be replicated, whether more international institutions participate and how effectively GIFT IFSC develops as a centre for aircraft leasing.

Nevertheless, the transaction establishes a notable precedent: a financing arrangement that supports IndiGo’s fleet ambitions while opening a new avenue for international aviation finance through India’s financial-services hub.
