Stating that the global trade relations were essential in the present times, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan announced that the trade relations between India and Papua New Guinea were on the rise.
He was speaking at the India Papua New Guinea Summit organized by the India Pacific Islands Trade Council in Alwarpet, Chennai recently.
Tamil Nadu Minister of State for NRI Affairs and Minority Welfare Gingee KS Masthan said, “Tamils living abroad should come to Tamil Nadu to start business. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, is taking special steps in this regard.”
He further said the role of expatriate Tamils was essential for the economic development of Tamil Nadu.
Newly appointed South India Trade Commissioner of Papua New Guinea IK Jayanthilal thanked Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to India Paulias Korni for appointing him to this coveted post.
In his acceptance speech, IK.Jayanthi said that he would take trade delegations from South India to the island nation for enabling trade opportunities between both countries.
“Further, I will do my best to improve the collaborations between South India & PNG by bringing FDI in various government projects. There are lot of hope in Public-Private Partnerships for developing projects in the field of infrastructure, energy, mines & minerals, automobiles, textiles, etc. Exchanging of technical knowhow in agriculture & MSME sectors will be a great boon for the PNG. Tamil Nadu’s higher education institutes facilitate PNG students to study medical, information technology & management courses,” Jayanthilal added.
He further said that perishable & non-perishable goods like rice, and vehicles, machineries & equipment open new vistas for enhancing trade between both countries. Tamil Nadu can act as a catalyst for outsourcing machine parts, tools, rubber parts, etc.
Dr Venkatasalam Murugan, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India; Dr.Asif Iqbal, Sujoy Maitra, Dr RL Kannan were also present on the occasion.
