Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Ltd on Friday announced that the breakthrough of tunnelling in the up stretch was completed on August 12 and the final tunnelling, including both upline and downline, was completed at noon on Tuesday.
“This highly specialized work was completed by Indian firms and Indian engineers, mining through congested part of the World Heritage city of Ahmedabad. The average depth of the tunnel is 18 metre below the ground level and the work involved the removal of 3.3 lakh cubic metre of earth, 52300 cum. of concreting, utilizing nearly 2 lakh man-days and a supporting system of 4,000 concrete rings. Migrant labourers who had left due to COVID were flown back by the agencies from Orissa to complete this activity,” the release added.
Tunnelling works in the 6.51 km underground section between Apparel Park and Shahpur of the metro completed for upline on 12.08.2020 and downline at 1200 hrs today. The 40-m Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I, undertaken by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has a 6.51 km underground section. This underground section extends from Apparel Park in the eastern area to Shahpur, just before Sabarmati River. The work of 5.8 diameter twin tunnels, one for upline and one for downline was executed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Afcons utilizing four TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machines).
