In a ceremony that seamlessly blended the spirit of sportsmanship with that of soldiering, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday formally conferred the insignia of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army upon two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra. The event, held at South Block, New Delhi, marked a proud moment for both the sporting and defence communities.
Congratulating the javelin ace, Rajnath Singh lauded his unwavering commitment to excellence and his embodiment of national pride.
“Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra is an epitome of perseverance, patriotism and the Indian spirit of striving for excellence. He represents the new India—one that never gives up, one that always aims higher. His achievements remind us that discipline, courage, and passion can turn dreams into history,” said the Defence Minister.
The ceremony was attended by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, senior officers from the Indian Army and the Territorial Army, as well as Chopra’s family members, who witnessed the proud moment as the golden boy of Indian athletics was decorated with his new insignia.

Neeraj’s Journey: From Khandra to the Nation’s Pride
Enrolled in the Indian Army in 2016, Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra has served with the Rajputana Rifles, a regiment known for its valour and legacy. Born on December 24, 1997, in Khandra village, Panipat district, Haryana, Neeraj’s rise from a small-town athlete to an international icon has been nothing short of inspirational.
Neeraj created history by becoming India’s first-ever Olympic Gold Medalist in track and field at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. His golden throw elevated Indian athletics to the world stage. He continued his stellar form with a Silver Medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 and a Gold Medal at the World Athletics Championships 2023.
With multiple Gold Medals at the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Diamond League, Neeraj has become a global ambassador of Indian sporting excellence. His personal best throw of 90.23 metres (2025) remains a monumental milestone in Indian athletics.

He also thanked the Indian Army for being a constant pillar of support throughout his sporting journey.
“The Army has taught me the true meaning of service and resilience. Whether on the field or off it, I will continue to strive for the nation’s glory,” he added.

In acknowledgment of his phenomenal contributions to Indian sport and national pride, Neeraj Chopra has been honoured with some of the country’s highest civilian and military decorations, including:
