In light of the sudden rise in COVID-19 cases, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired a high-level meeting on Friday to review the administration’s preparedness to deal with the situation.
After the meeting, the Gujarat government on Friday announced a series of measures, including a night curfew in 10 cities, to control the spread of the virus in the state.
According to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel the night curfew will be in effect from 10 pm to 6 am in Ahmedabad, Anand, Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Nadiad, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. Among these, the curfew was already in force in eight cities, except Anand and Nadiad, from 1am to 5am

Municipal Commissioners of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Gandhinagar cities along with collectors and district development officers of Anand, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad and Kutch attended the meeting through video-conference, a government release said.

Chief principal secretary to the chief minister, K Kailashnathan, chief secretary Pankaj Kumar and ACS-Health Mukesh Kumar attended the meet in person, it stated.
As per the release, municipal commissioners and district collectors shared the latest details and data about the vaccination drive, tracing and tracking of cases, availability of beds and medicines and status of isolated patients in their respective districts.

For better response and coordination, the state government has already asked all the in-charge secretaries to reach their allotted districts, the chief secretary informed Patel during the meeting.

The chief minister urged city and district administrators to continuously monitor infected patients, both in home isolation and those admitted to hospitals, the release stated. To increase people”s immunity, the state government plans to provide an Ayurvedic powder mix (kadha) in cities and districts from January 10, it was stated.
Administrators have been directed to make sure that this Ayurvedic mix, to be taken with hot water, reaches the public, the release stated.

Restricts gathering of crowds
For open spaces, the government also announced a ceiling of 400 attendees for political and social events, weddings etc. In case of a closed venue, it said, not more than 50 percent of the total capacity will be allowed. For funerals, maximum 100 mourners will be allowed to gather.
According to the official order, establishments such as shops, spas, shopping complexes, malls, hotels and restaurants can function till 10 pm, albeit at a maximum capacity of 75 percent. The same limit is also applicable for government and non-government AC buses.

Meanwhile, a cap of 50 percent has been announced for cinema halls, gyms, swimming pools, libraries etc. The government has also ordered closure of all educational institutes till January 31.
State logs 5,396 fresh cases, 1 fatality
Gujarat reported an all-time high of 5,396 fresh Covid cases and one death in Surat during the last 24 hours as on Friday evening, the state registered a jump of 1,183 cases since Thursday.
After having cancelled its high-octane Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit that was to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the State Government has extended the night curfew time by one hour to make it 10 pm to 6 am and imposed several other restrictions.
With Friday’s surge, the State’s active caseload has increased to 18,583 and the official death toll to 10,128. Twenty-nine patients are on ventilator support.
Ahmedabad continued to drive the surge with 2,289 cases, which is a jump of 25% since Thursday.
Surat followed with 1,350 cases, Vadodara 239, Rajkot 203, Valsad 142, Anand 133, Kheda 104 and Gandhinagar 91.
Gujarat had no Omicron cases for the second day on Friday. The number of Omicron infections so far in the state stood at 204.
The educational institutions in Gujarat will remain closed till Jan 31, the state government announced on Friday.
