In view of the ongoing ‘extremely severe’ cyclonic storm, Biparjoy which is about to make landfall at the Kutchh and Saurashtra coast in Gujarat as well as in Pakistan on Thursday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a video conference with all the officials of the to be potentially affected area on Sunday.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has assigned the responsibility to the senior ministers of the state cabinet for guidance in the advance planning and disaster management works done by the district administration against the possible impact of Biporjoy cyclone in the coastal districts of the state and also instructed the ministers to reach the concerned districts.
Accordingly, Ministers Rishikeshbhai Patel and Prafulbhai Panseria in Kutch district, Kanubhai Desai in Morbi, Raghavjibhai Patel in Rajkot, Kunwarjibhai Bavaliya in Porbandar, Mulubhai Bera in Jamnagar, Harshbhai Sanghvi in Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jagdishbhai Vishwakarma in Junagadh and Parasottambhai Solanki for Gir Somnath has been assigned.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday paid a visit to the State Emergency Operation Center to review the preparedness of coastal districts of the state against possible cyclones, the CMO said.
The very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy turned into an extremely severe cyclonic storm at 5.30 am Sunday. However, it may not hit Gujarat as per the current forecast, said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official on Sunday.

The cyclone will bring thunderstorms and strong wind in Gujarat in the next five days as it is likely to pass at a distance of 200-300 km from the Porbandar coast.
In its latest forecast, the IMD said the cyclone will move north-northeastwards gradually during the next 24 hours, before moving north-north-westward during the subsequent three days.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday evening issued a Cyclone alert for Saurashtra & Kutch Coast. IMD said, “Yellow Message. ESCS BIPARJOY over eastcentral Arabian Sea, at 1730 IST of 11th June near lat 18.6N & long 67.7E, Likely to cross between Mandvi (Gujarat) & Karachi (Pakistan) by noon of 15th June.”
Congress Porbandar MLA Arjun Modhwadia said, “With the aim of zero casualty, all necessary steps are being taken for Agam Cheti. I also appeal to the people to be alert till the danger of #Cyclone is removed and follow the information given by the administration.”
Newly installed Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief and Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil said on Sunday, “Let us pray to God that our Gujarat remains safe from the natural calamities of cyclones. When the impact of the cyclone has started in the coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch, the government system should also be alert enough to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure that there is no loss of life and property.”
Extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is expected to cross Saurashtra and District Kachchh around noon on June 15, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.
“Extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is expected to cross Saurashtra and District Kachchh around noon on June 15. People should stay at safe locations on the day it crosses the Gujarat coast,” said IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.
He said that when the cyclonic storm reaches near the cost of Kachchh the wind speed is expected to reach around 125 to 135 kmph.
“To cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts bw Mandvi, Gujarat and Karachi, Pakistan around noon of June 15 as VSCS (very severe cyclonic storm),” the IMD tweeted. In an advisory issued in the early hours of Sunday, the IMD said during the day wind speeds will touch 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along and off Saurashtra and Kutch coast.
It will further increase to 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph on Monday, and 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph during Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is very likely to prevail along and off Saurashtra coast, the IMD said.
Sea conditions along and off Saurashtra and Kutch coasts will likely remain “rough to very rough” till Wednesday, and very rough to high on Thursday, it said. The IMD has advised total suspension of fishing operations in the region till June 15 and has asked fishermen to not venture into central Arabian sea, north Arabian sea during June 12-15, and along and off Saurashtra-Kutch coasts till June 15.
It further advised those out at sea to return to coast and regulate offshore and onshore activities judiciously. “In view of the above, the state governments are advised to keep a close watch, monitor the situation in their areas regularly and take appropriate precautionary measures. District authorities are advised accordingly,” the IMD said.
