Gujarat reported its highest-ever single-day spike of 778 coronavirus positive cases on Tuesday, taking the tally to 37,636, while 17 more patients succumbed to the infection, five of them in Ahmedabad, the state health department said.

The state reported the deaths of 17 more COVID-19 patients, raising the fatalities to 1,979.
Also, 421 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered cases in Gujarat to 26,744, the department said in a release.

Surat continued to report the highest number of new coronavirus cases among districts in Gujarat, with 249 fresh infections on Tuesday.
As against this, Ahmedabad, which was earlier leading the tally among districts, reported 187 new cases, taking the total to 22,262.

Vadodara reported 68 new cases, taking the count in the district to 2,696.
Among other districts, Rajkot reported 40 new cases, Valsad and Bhavnagar 21 each, Mehsana and Bharuch 15 each, Kutch 14, Navsari 13, Banaskantha 12, Kheda and Surendranagar 11 each, among others.
Out of the 17 fresh deaths, five were reported from Ahmedabad, three from Surat, two from Jamnagar, and one each from Devbhumi Dwarka, Banaskantha, Morbi, Patan, Kheda, Rajkot and Gandhinagar.
The COVID-19 death toll in Ahmedabad rose to 1,496, the highest in the state.
The state now has 8,913 active cases, with the condition of 61 patients being critical, the department said.
Gujarat has so far tested 4,25,830 samples for coronavirus.

249 cases take Surat count to 7,001, toll now 266
The number of COVID-19 cases reached 7,001 in Surat in Gujarat after 249 people tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, while three deaths took the toll in the district to 266, an official said on Tuesday.
While 204 cases were from Surat city, the rest were from the district”s rural parts, he added.

Surat now has the second-highest number of cases in the state after Ahmedabad where the figure currently stands at 22,262.
With 76 people getting discharged during the day, the number of such cases is now 4,209.
Despite steps like closing paan shops, diamond polishing units, and banning street vendors in Katargam, Varachha, and Sarthana, the rise in cases in these three areas of the city continued.

Ahmedabad cases rise by 187 to 22,262
Ahmedabad district reported 187 new coronavirus cases and death of five COVID-19 patients on Tuesday, the Gujarat health department said.
The number of coronavirus cases in the district, thus, rose to 22,262, while the death toll rose to 1,496, it said.

As many as 124 patients were discharged during the day, taking the number of recovered cases in the district to 17,193, it said.
172 new cases were reported in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits and 15 from the rural areas of the district, it said.
Of the five deaths due to the pandemic, four were reported from Ahmedabad city.

As per a Tuesday afternoon release by the AMC, of 21,185 cases reported in the city till July 6, 16,652 patients or 78.6 percent of total cases had recovered.
There are 3,079 – 14.5 percent of total – active cases in the city, the municipal corporation said.
The death toll in the city was 1,454 or 6.9 percent of the total, it said.
There are 603 active cases in the western zone of the city, which is 19.6 percent of total active cases, the highest for a zone in the city.
With 454 cases, “super spreaders” account for 14.7 percent of total active cases, it said.

The death toll rate of Ahmedabad has come down to 75.84% from earlier around 81%. Gujarat has one of the highest mortality rates in the country at 5.25.
Gujarat High Court is now in micro-containment zone
The Gujarat High Court will remain closed for three days from July 8 to 10 as it has been declared as one of the new micro-containment zones in Ahmedabad.
Six staffers of the HC and one police constable were reported corona positive on Tuesday. The entire campus will be sanitised, sources said.
