The number of COVID-19 patients in Gujarat rose to 11,380 after 391 new cases were reported on Sunday, while the death toll reached 659 as the virus claimed 34 more lives, a health department official said.

As many as 191 coronavirus patients were discharged from the hospitals on Sunday, taking the number of recovered patients in the state to 4,499, Principal Secretary (Health), Jayanti Ravi said.
Of the 19 districts which reported new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, 276 were found in Ahmedabad alone, while Surat and Vadodara reported 45 and 21 new cases respectively.
The number of COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad rose to 8,420, while in Surat and Vadodara, the tally went up to 1,094 and 660 respectively.
As many as 31 COVID-19 patients died in Ahmedabad, two in Surat, and one in Panchmahal.
With this, the death toll in Ahmedabad district has gone up to 524 such patients.
As many as 191 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from state hospitals Sunday, due to which the count of recovered persons reached 4,499.
Of these, 115 patients were discharged from Ahmedabadhospitals. It took the total number of recovered patients here to 5,236 there.

“With this, Gujarat has achieved the recovery rate of 39.53 percent,” Ravi said.
Out of the 6,222 active cases, 38 are on ventilator support, she said.
The state has so far conducted tests on 1,43,600 samples for coronavirus, Ravi said.
Other districts that reported the high number of COVID-19 cases are Gandhinagar (168), Bhavnagar (108), Banaskantha (83), Anand (83), Rajkot (79), Aravalli (78), Mehsana (75), Panchmahal (71) and Botad (56).

With Surat returnee boy, Amreli gets first containment zone
Amreli district recorded its second novel coronavirus with an 11-year-old boy who returned to his native place in Bagasara town from Surat testing positive on Sunday. With this, the first containment zone was also created in the district as the boy returned to his home three days ago.

“The boy arrived in Amreli via a GSRTC bus from Varachha area in Surat on May 13. He had a fever and therefore his samples were taken and reports of the samples returned positive this morning,” an official release from the information department quoted Amreli collector Ayush Oak as saying.

Ahmedabad cases rise by 276 to 8420; 31 more die
The number of COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad district mounted to 8,420 on Sunday with 276 more people testing positive for coronavirus while the fatalities rose to 524 after 31 patients succumbing to the viral infection, a Health official said.
A total of 115 patients were discharged, taking the total number of recovered cases here to 5,236.

Amid the rising number of cases in the city, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has identified 42 private hospitals as “designated COVID hospitals”.
“These hospitals shall provide 50 percent of the total numbers of beds for COVID-19 patients to be referred by the AMC,” it said.
Mukesh Kumar named Ahmedabad civic chief
Meanwhile, the state government has appointed Vice Chairman and CEO of Gujarat Maritime Board Mukesh Kumar as the full-fledged Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad in place of Vijay Nehra who is in quarantine.
Nehra was transferred as Commissioner of Rural Development and Secretary to Government (Rural Development), a little over a week after he self-quarantined himself after getting exposed to the coronavirus positive persons, said a government notification.
Metro Rail services in Ahmedabad will continue to be suspended till May 31
In line with the extension of nationwide lockdown, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited on Sunday announced that it will continue to suspend the services of Ahmedabad Metro till May 31 to encourage the public to stay indoors and maintain social distancing, which is essential in fighting against Covid-19, says a GMRC press statement.
4,688 works in progress under the third phase of SSJA
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday announced that in phase three of Sujalam Sufalam Jal Abhiyan (SSJA) 4,688 works are under progress to increase the state’s water holding capacity through sustainable methods.
Secretary to the CM Ashwani Kumar said, “916 works have been completed and 4,688 are under progress in 33 districts of Gujarat. A total of 23,500 lakh cubic feet of water was successfully conserved in the first two phases of the initiative. 67,940 tools and equipment (14,776 JCB, 53,764 tractors, and dumpers) have been used so far. 11,42,167 man-days have been generated so far through works under MNREGA. At present, 73,59,222.91 cubic meters of water can be stored through the completed works under SSJA. The dug-out soil is being provided to farmers free of cost.”
Around 7 lakh migrants sent home through Shramik trains in the last 15 days
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday said that the state government has sent home around 7 lakh migrant workers in the last 15 days.
Providing details of the same, Secretary to the CM, Ashwani Kumar said, “The state government has operated 447 labour trains to ensure the safe return of 6 lakh 26 thousand migrant workers as of May 16, Saturday midnight. 315 trains have been operated for U.P, 46 for Bihar, 38 for Orissa, 23 for M.P, 12 for Jharkhand, 6 for Chhattisgarh, 4 for Uttarakhand and 1 each for Rajasthan and Manipur.”
29 trains will be operated Sunday to send 46,000 workers to U.P, Bihar, Orissa, M.P, Chattisgarh and other states. Out of this, 19 will be for UP, 5 for Bihar, 2 for Jharkhand, 1 each for Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Orissa.
A total of 6.72 lakh migrant workers have been sent through Shramik trains from Gujarat. All necessary safety protocols are being observed in the Shramik trains in addition to the provision of food and potable water for the labourers.
