Out of 9,724 cases in Ahmedabad district, 9,574 were from the city while 150 cases were reported from other parts of the district.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has acquired 1,500 beds from private hospitals so far. 500 COVID-19 patients have been admitted to such hospitals.

Ahmedabad shows improvement in recovery rate

According to Dr Rajiv Kumar Gupta, additional chief secretary, who is OSD of Ahmedabad, the recovery rate has increased by over 140 per cent against the recovery rate in the state that has increased by 92 per cent.

He said the recovery rate of Ahmedabad that was 15.85 per cent on May 5, was 38.1 per cent on May 21. Gujarat’s recovery rate was 22.11 per cent on May 5 and was 42.51 per cent on May 21. India’s recovery rate, according to him, was 28.62 per cent on May 5 and came to 41.06 per cent on May 21.

Gupta attributed the increased recovery rate to the multi-pronged strategy adopted. He said the number of surveillance teams have been increased from 318 to 616 and added that due to increased surveillance, the cases are detected early and hence the recovery rate has gone higher.

He said the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has requisitioned 42 private hospitals and ordered them to provide 50 per cent beds for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. A total of 1,500 beds have been provided for COVID-19 patients so far, he added.

Admission of serious patients behind high mortality: Civil Hospital OSD

The Ahmedabad civil hospital in Gujarat on Friday said that the high mortality rate in COVID-19 cases and low recovery rate at the facility is mostly because serious coronavirus patients with high chances of death are admitted there.

Civil Hospital OSD Dr M M Prabhakar also claimed that unlike many other hospitals which mostly admit asymptomatic patients and give discharge in three days if the patient doesn’t have a fever, treatment of serious patients at this facility goes on for over 10 days.

“We mostly admit serious coronavirus patients. We also admit patients who were turned away by other hospitals. We first keep them on oxygen support and then on a ventilator. The treatment of such serious patients go on for over 10 days. We give them discharge only after they test negative for the infection,” he said.

“Other hospitals admit asymptomatic patients and give discharge in three days as per the new policy. This is not the case with us. But we admit serious patients and treat them for many days. So it shows difference in the recovery rate,” Prabhakar added.

According to him, the number of deaths at the civil hospital ‘appear high’ because many patients who are brought there were either already dead or die shortly after admission.

This government-run hospital located in Asarwa area of the city is considered as the largest civil hospital in Asia.

The hospital’s defence came days after a data shared by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) revealed that nearly 50 per cent of the total coronavirus infection deaths in Gujarat so far have been reported from this civil hospital.

Out of the total 749 COVID-19 deaths reported across Gujarat till May 20, as many as 351 patients succumbed to the disease in the Ahmedabad civil hospital, as per the data shared by the city civic body.

This data suggested that unlike the other two hospitals in the city, more people with COVID-19 had died than recovered and given discharge from the civil hospital.

Congress MLA from Ahmedabad Gyasuddin Shaikh on Tuesday raised questions on the high mortality and low discharge rate at the civil hospital, and sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the matter.

In a letter to the NHRC, Shaikh had alleged that negligence and improper treatment given to COVID-19 patients in the Ahmedabad civil hospital is leading to high number of deaths.

87 GCRI staffers test positive in 40 days

Eighty-seven staffers of the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute (GCRI) have tested positive for novel coronavirus in the last 40 days, its deputy director Pariseema Dave said on Friday.

A premier cancer institute jointly managed by the state government and the Gujarat Cancer Society, GCRI, situated in the sprawling campus of the civil hospital in Asarwa here, has been designated as a facility for COVID-19 treatment.

“Over a period of 40 days, 87 of our staff have tested positive for novel coronavirus. They include over 20 doctors, nurses and other staff members. Majority of them were asymptomatic and found positive after testing. Barring a nurse, everyone who tested positive before 10 days have recovered and been discharged,” Dave said.

GCRI is also a regional cancer centre of the Union government getting assistance under National Cancer Control Programme.
