Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat lauded the efforts of the Indian Coast Guard (North West) in safeguarding the nation’s maritime boundary.
He was speaking at the Ceremonial Reception organised at Udyog Bhavan Premises, Gandhinagar on Saturday to mark the 49th Raising Day.
The Governor extended greetings to ICG on the occasion. He also lauded the efforts of Coast Guard (North West) in apprehension of 320 Kgs of Drugs worth Rs. 958 crores in three narcotics ops, saving 70 lives at Sea and rescue of 111 lives during Cyclone ‘ASNA’ (27-29 Aug 24), the ICG release stated.
Inspector General T Sashi Kumar, TM, Commander Coast Guard Region (North West) and Archana Sashi Kumar, Regional President Tatrakshika (NW) hosted the event on behalf of the entire ICG fraternity.
Senior Officers of Armed Forces, Police and Central/ State Government also attended the event.
Making a modest beginning in 1978 with seven ships, the Indian Coast Guard, has grown exponentially in last 49 years into formidable Force with more than 165 ships/ACVs and 76 aircraft as on date, and is playing a commendable role in securing the vast Maritime Zones of India. The major charter of duties and responsibilities of ICG includes Coastal Security, Enforcement of Maritime Laws at Sea, Safety of Life and Property at Sea, Pollution Response and Safety and Protection of Offshore Installations.
To safeguard the sensitive maritime boundary of Gujarat, Daman and Diu, ICG had established Regional Headquarters (North West) at Gandhinagar on 16 Dec 2009. Since then, the Regional Headquarters has been ensuring 24 x 7 vigil through deployment of Ships/ACV and Aircraft, through District HQs No. 1 at Porbandar and District HQs No. 15 at Okha, together with frontline units at Jakhau, Mundra, Vadinar, Okha, Porbandar, Veraval and Pipavav. On an average, 15-18 ships and 2-3 aircraft are deployed everyday to ensure maritime surveillance and deterrence and also to respond to any eventuality, including saving of life & property at Sea.
