Claiming that mass media has the potential to change the public opinion, preserve history as well as to innovate it but it ought to ‘proofread’ the news for its veracity, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel lauded the vital role of the journalists in strengthening the democracy.

He was speaking at the third edition of Gujarat Media Awards held at Tagore Hall, Ahmedabad.

Referring to the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, the CM said, “We should determined to take the country to new heights through the medium of journalism.”

Further referring to the role of journalism in the freedom struggle, he said that Gandhian journalism played an important role in the Indian independence movement.

The Chief Minister honoured the best 25 journalists in different categories from television, print, radio and digital media.

Kirti Khatri senior journalist and Editor of ‘Kutch Mitra’ was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award.

On this occasion well known journalists Devendra Patel, Ajay Umat, and Jayanti Dave and many dignitaries were present.

“We are indebted to the panel of jurists former Chief Secretary of Gujarat and Trustee of Somnath Mandir Trust PK Laheri, Gujarat University Head of Journalism Department Dr Sonal Pandya, and NIMCJ director Dr Shirish Kashikar for their valuable contribution in selecting the best awardees,” said Ankit Hingu, the main organiser of the event.

The awards were jointly instituted by the Media Welfare Trust and Sun Media Services.

A large number of media professionals and students of journalism from Gujarat were present at the award ceremony.
