With 324 new coronavirus cases reported during the last 24 hours, the count in Gujarat reached 9,592 on Thursday, while 20 more patients died of the infection, said a health department official.

During the same period, 20 patients succumbed to the infection, taking the toll to 586 in the state, said Principal Secretary, Health, Jayanti Ravi.
She said as many as 191 persons also recovered and discharged from different hospitals in the state, taking the tally of such people to 3,753.

Ravi said the patient recovery rate in Gujarat has improved and now reached 38.43 percent, which according to her, was a good sign tackling the health crisis.
Out of the total 324 new cases detected in the past 24 hours, 265 were from Ahmedabad district alone, she said.
Other districts where a significant number of new cases have been reported are Surat (16), Vadodara (13), and Mehsana (6).

Of the total of 20 patients who succumbed to the infection during the last 24 hours, as many as 19 died in different hospitals in Ahmedabad and one in Surat, the official said.
Till now, Gujarat has conducted 1,24,709 tests, out of which 9,592 came positive, while 1,15,117 turned up negative.
Out of the total 9,592 cases registered in Gujarat so far, as many as 6,910 were reported in Ahmedabad district alone, followed by 983 in Surat and 605 in Vadodara.
A majority of the deaths were also reported in these three districts.
While 465 have died so far in Ahmedabad, 44 have died in Surat and 32 in Vadodara.

Refuting some media reports suggesting that a lesser number of tests are being done to project a rosy picture about positive cases, Ravi said Gujarat’s per million testing average is higher than many states and also above the national average.
“It’s a misconception that we are conducting fewer tests. Gujarat has conducted 1,859 tests per million, much higher than the national average of 1,343.
“In the test per million criteria, we are also better than Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala,” said Ravi in a video message.
Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 9592, new cases 324, deaths 586, discharged 3753, active cases 5253, people tested so far 1,24,709.
265 COVID-19 cases bring Ahmedabad tally near 7,000; 19 die
The number of coronavirus cases in Ahmedabad district rose to 6,910 on Thursday after 265 new infections were reported in the last 24 hours, while the death toll increased to 465, said health department officials.
Out of the total 20 persons who died in Gujarat during the period due to the viral infection, as many as 19 succumbed in different hospitals in Ahmedabad city, said Principal Secretary, Health, Jayanti Ravi.
Ahmedabad, a commercial hub, remained the worst affected district in Gujarat with 6,910 COVID-19 cases and 465 deaths reported so far.
Out of the 265 new cases, 260 were recorded in Ahmedabad city, and five in rural areas of the district, Ravi said.
Similarly, out of the total 6,910 cases registered in Ahmedabad district so far, as many as 6,783 were from the city and the rest 127 from other parts of the district.
As many as 135 patients were discharged from various hospitals of the city on Thursday, Ravi said.
To contain the spread of the virus, Ahmedabad city was put under a complete lockdown since May 7. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had ordered the closure of all shops, except those selling milk and medicines, from May 7 to May 15.
Now, the AMC has relaxed certain curbs and announced that shops selling essential items like fruits, vegetables, and groceries will be allowed to reopen from May 15.
After reviewing the situation, Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Gupta, who is overseeing works related to COVID-19 in Ahmedabad, said shops selling essential items such as vegetables, fruits and groceries will remain open between 8 am and 3 pm from May 15.
“We have already screened 17,000 vendors and issued health cards to them. o maintain social distancing and avoid overcrowding, we want women to come out for shopping between 8 am and 11 am.
“Men should come out only after 11 am. People must wear a mask while venturing out of their homes,” said Gupta.

Director-General of Police Shivanand Jha said that police are keeping a watchful eye on the movement of people to curb the spread of Corona. Those found violating the lockdown will face strict actions.

“The police are on their toes to ensure that no public gatherings take place, but in some cases, people were found gathering without any valid reason. Also, if people are caught loitering around unnecessarily, their vehicles will be detained. Similarly, some vendors are selling prohibited items during lockdown which can lead to legal consequences,” Jha said.

Jha reiterated guidelines and said that if more than one person on two-wheelers and more than two persons are found in four-wheelers, actions will be taken against them. Likewise, gathering at religious places is prohibited. Despite clear instructions, 8 people including a pujari were booked on Wednesday for gathering at a temple in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad for the evening prayer.
The state police condemn forging passes and misusing valid permits given for essential services. Jha said a container was caught for ferrying 105 workers from Rajkot to another state at Umreth in Anand district. The owner of the container has been booked for the offence and the vehicle has been detained. On the other hand, the state monitoring cell seized a container full of liquor worth Rs. 51 lakh on Palanpur highway. A case has been registered for misuse of essential service permits.
Jha said that 204 crimes have been registered through drones. A total of 23,272 people have been arrested for 12,840 offenses to date. Meanwhile, under the Smart City and VISWAS project, 101 individuals have been arrested for 100 crimes reported through the CCTV network tallying up to 4,453 individuals for 3,311 crimes. Additionally, 708 crimes have been registered so far and 978 people have been arrested through CCTV surveillance in residential societies.
Similarly, for spreading fake messages and rumors through social media, so far 789 crimes have been registered and 1,618 accused have been arrested. 744 accounts have been blocked so far. 6,823 offences have been registered so far respectively, through videography and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and with the camera mounted special ‘Prahari’ Van.
Cases that have been registered so far include 2,218 of the violation of lockdown, 718 against those violating quarantine, and 616 other cases. Also, 5,828 vehicles have been seized in the state while 2,34,692 detained vehicles have been released so far.
