Gujarat Science City’s Nature Club “ECo LiFE” celebrated World Sparrow Day on Wednesday with an earnest commitment to spreading awareness about sparrow conservation. The event, held at Gujarat Science City premises, witnessed the participation of approximately 100 students and teachers from Kalupur Primary School, Acharya Academy, Children’s Development for Education Centre, and Government Science College, Gandhinagar.
Jagat Kingkhabwala, affectionately known as the Sparrow Man for his dedicated efforts towards sparrow conservation, graced the occasion as the key speaker. His insightful words resonated with the attendees, inspiring them to take active steps towards preserving the delicate ecosystem that these charming birds are a part of.
One of the highlights of the program was the distribution of free nests to the participants and visitors. This initiative aimed to encourage and facilitate sparrow nesting in urban areas, providing a safe haven for these avian residents.
Moreover, the students seized the opportunity to express their commitment to sparrow conservation through written messages and slogans. Their heartfelt appeals underscored the urgency of safeguarding these birds and their habitats for future generations.
Adding a touch of cultural significance, the attendees joined in singing the traditional “Chaki Ben Chaki Ben” song, symbolizing the communal effort to welcome house sparrows back into urban spaces where they have become less common.
The event not only served as a platform for education and awareness but also fostered a sense of responsibility and ownership among the youth towards environmental conservation.
As we commemorate World Sparrow Day, let us renew our pledge to protect and cherish these small yet significant creatures, ensuring their continued presence in our lives and landscapes.
