Gujarat’s COVID-19 cases go past 90,000; death toll mounts to 2,947

Gujarat’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 90,000-mark and rose to 90,139 on Wednesday with the addition of 1,197 new cases, the state health department said.

With 17 fatalities, the total count mounted to 2,947, it said.

A total of 1,047 patients were discharged in the day, taking the overall count of recoveries in the state to 72,308, the department said in its release.

The state’s recovery rate now stands at 80.22 percent, it said.

A total of 77,949 tests were conducted in the state in the last 24 hours, which comes at the rate of 1,199.21 tests per day per million population, as per the department.

19,69,724 samples have been tested so far in the state, it said.

In August, Gujarat has reported an average of 1,104 cases every day.

Surat reported 253 cases, followed by Ahmedabad (163), Vadodara, (124), Rajkot (99), Jamnagar (88), Bhavnagar (45), Gandhinagar (43), Amreli (34), Panchmahals (31), Junagadh and Bharuch (29 each), Kutch (24), Banaskantha (23), Mahesana and Patan (21 each), Dahod (19), Morbi (17), Gir-Somnath (16), Kheda (14), Narmada and Porbandar (12 each), Devbhumi Dwarka (11), Mahisagar (10), Chhota Udepur, Tapi and Anand (8 each), Navsari and Surendranagar (7 each), Botad, Sabarkantha and Valsad (6 each), Aravalli (2) and Dang (1).

Seventeen people succumbed to the dreaded virus on Wednesday – five in Ahmedabad, four each in Surat and Rajkot, two in Vadodara, and one each in Dahod and Gir-Somnath.

The death toll of Ahmedabad, which used to be around 81 percent of the total toll during the peak of the outbreak, has gradually come down to less than 60 per cent. On Wednesday, it came down to 57.75 per cent. Gujarat’s mortality rate is also gradually coming down and is 3.26 percent at present.

A total of 1,047 patients were discharged on Wednesday, taking the total number of recoveries to 72,308.

At present, there are 14,884 active cases in the state, of which the condition of 14,798 is stable, whereas 86 critical patients are on ventilator support.

A total of 4,77,038 people are quarantined in the state at present – 4,76,372 under home quarantine and 666 in government facilities.

Ahmedabad cases rise by 163 to 30,682; 5 die

The COVID-19 tally in Ahmedabad district rose to 30,682 on Wednesday with the addition of 163 new cases, the Gujarat health department said.

With five more patients succumbing to the virus, the death toll rose to 1,697, it said.

A total of 164 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the count of recoveries to 25,605 in the district, the department said.

Ahmedabad city reported 144 new cases and the rural parts of the district 19, it said.

Four of the five deaths occurred in the city and one from rural Ahmedabad, it added.

Ahmedabad’s south-west zone has the highest number of 472 active cases, followed by the north-west and west zones at 465 and 452 cases, respectively, the civic body said.

The recovery rate in the city stands at 84.2 percent with 24,293 patients discharged so far, it said.

On the other hand, rural parts of Ahmedabad achieved the recovery rate of 92 percent with 1,551 patients getting recovered.

At 401, Dholka taluka in Ahmedabad district reported the highest number of cases so far, followed by Sanand at 393, officials said.

Surat reports 253 new cases; 4 die, 174 recover

Surat’s COVID-19 tally rose to 19,926 on Wednesday with the addition of 253 new cases, the Gujarat health department said.

With four more deaths, fatalities rose to 793 in the south Gujarat district, it said.

Two deaths each were reported in the city and the rural parts of the district, the department said in a release.

The number of recovered cases rose to 16,305, with 174 more patients getting discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, it said.

As many as 168 new cases were reported in Surat city and the rest 85 in the rural parts of the district.

The Surat civic body said it has surveyed over 8 lakh people in areas where positive cases were reported, while 28,753 people are quarantined in the city.

The Katargam locality in the city has reported a total of 3,004 cases so far, the highest in the city, with 19 cases added on Wednesday.

The Rander locality reported the highest 30 cases on Wednesday, taking its tally to 2,167, the Surat Municipal Corporation said.
