Gujarat has witnessed increase in energy supply in the last four years as the energy supply in the state has gone up by 28% from 1,13,939 million units in FY2020 to 1,45,740 million units in FY2024. In addition, the state’s energy supply in the first nine months of FY2025 has already touched 1,13,697 million units.

The information was provided by Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik on Monday in Rajya Sabha, while replying to a question raised by MP Parimal Nathwani.

The government also plans to increase India’s total installed generation capacity from all sources to 900 GW in 2031-32.

According to the statement of the minister, the government has transformed the country from power deficit to power sufficient in the last ten years. Present installed generation capacity of the country is 4,62,065 MW. Government of India has addressed the critical issue of power deficiency by adding 2,30,050 MW of generation capacity since April, 2014, according to the minister.

The minister also stated that installed generation capacity in 2031-32 is likely to be 900 GW, including capacity from conventional sources- Coal, Lignite etc., renewable sources- Solar, Wind, Hydro, Pump Storage project (PSP) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). He also said that Ministry of Power, in consultation with States, has envisaged a plan to add thermal capacity of a minimum 80,000 MW by 2031-32. Against this target, 28,020 MW Thermal Capacity is already under construction and contracts for 19,200 MW thermal capacity have been awarded in FY 2024-25, said the minster and added that further, 36,320 MW of coal and lignite-based candidate capacity has been identified which is at various stages of planning in the country.

He also said that 13,997.5 MW of Hydro Electric Projects and 8,000 MW Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) are under construction. 24,225.5 MW of hydro-electric projects and 50,760 MW of PSP are under various stage of planning and targeted to be completed by 2031-32, he added. The minister also informed that 7,300 MW of Nuclear Capacity is under construction and targeted to be completed by 2029-30. 7,000 MW is under various stages of planning and approval.

According to the statement of the minister, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued Bidding Trajectory for issuance of RE power procurement bids of 50 GW/annum by Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28 and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been permitted up to 100 percent under the automatic route. Talking about transmission planning, the minister said that as per the National Electricity Plan, about 1,91,474 ckm of transmission lines and 1274 GVA of transformation capacity is planned to be added (at 220 kV and above voltage level) during the ten-year period from 2022-23 to 2031-32.
