Renowned and retired IPS officer of 1973 Gujarat IPS Cadre Gurdial Singh has passed away this week due to COVID complications. He was 77, family sources said.
Born in Amritsar district of Punjab, Gurdial Singh was a decorated officer of the Indian Army and had a distinction of fighting for this motherland during the 1971 Bangladesh War.
He joined the IPS Cadre of Gujarat in 1973 and since then in his entire journey he created an aura around himself wherever he reported for duty. So much so that in his duty areas of Rajkot, Porbandar, Jamnagar and even in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad he was nicknamed as Cyclone who would have a devastating effect on criminal activities.
When he joined the Gujarat Electricity Board as Director – Vigilance, he took immediate steps to stop electricity thefts and curb illegal activities and that resulted in crores of saving for the State electricity board. Till date his colleagues, his junior police officers and their kids for whom Gurdial did many social activities and support regard him as a Influential, energetic and passionate role model who never faltered in his line of duty. In his last days also he was closely working with Blind People’s Association and helping them to get funds and support.
The State Police gave him a Guard Of Honour Salute at his cremation as a final farewell attended by few leading officers while maintaining the COVID protocols.
