The Indian Army under the aegis of Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) undertook an arduous and noble task of reaching out to the underprivileged and marginalised sections of the society in Chennai and Wellington in Tamilnadu for a week.
The Army personnel distributed cooked food, essential groceries, hygiene and sanitation materials and utilised the opportunity to spread awareness amongst the populace regarding the essential measures to be taken to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
In Chennai, cooked food, water and essential daily survival need groceries were distributed throughout the week to the daily wage labourers and migrants in Wallajah Road, Rajaji Salai, Broadway, Anna Salai, Mount Road and areas adjacent to the Fort Railway Station. The Army personnel in Wellington in Coonoor also distributed at Coonoor, Wellington, Kotagiri and Ooty in the Nilgiris.
Further essential groceries and items like Maggi, Oil, Biscuits, Soaps etc were also provided to an NGO, Food Bank Chennai for further distribution to the needy, a release said.
The representatives of the civil administration facilitated the Army in identification and distribution of essential commodities to the most needy population of the region and a large number of needy benefitted from this initiative.
In consonance with the Indian Army’s slogan “Har Kaam Desh Ke Naam” to fight against Covid-19, the units and centres under Dakshin Bharat Area reached out to the poor and needy people thereby upholding its ethos of “Service Before Self”, an Army press release said.
