NE HEALTH BUREAU
NEW DELHI, MAY 2

India may witness pockets of intense heat this May, especially across southern peninsular regions, parts of the east coast, and northwestern belts, according to the India Meteorological Department. However, experts stress that these conditions are not uniform nationwide and can be managed effectively with simple precautions.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has reassured citizens that there is “no reason for panic”, highlighting that improved forecasting systems and timely advisories enable better preparedness than ever before.

What the Forecast Indicates

  • Above-normal daytime temperatures likely in southern, northeastern, and northwestern regions
  • Heatwave days may increase by 2–4 days in select areas like coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and parts of Tamil Nadu
  • Hotter nights could add to discomfort, especially in urban and coastal zones
  • Relief spells expected during early and mid-May due to rainfall and cloud cover

Public Health First: Simple Precautions Matter Most

Stay Hydrated, Stay Safe

Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages that can dehydrate the body.

Limit Exposure During Peak Hours

Avoid stepping out between 12 PM and 3 PM, when temperatures are at their highest.

Protect the Most Vulnerable

Extra care for infants, the elderly, and outdoor workers is essential. Ensure shaded rest areas and hydration access.

Adapt Daily Routines

Farmers and outdoor workers should shift activities to early morning or late evening hours and ensure adequate irrigation and livestock care.

A Broader Climate Context

The Minister noted that ENSO-neutral conditions currently prevail, with a possible shift toward El Niño during the upcoming monsoon—factors that may influence temperature patterns. Despite this, India’s enhanced weather prediction systems are helping authorities issue impact-based, actionable alerts.

Government Readiness & Community Role

Authorities across states are ensuring:

  • Access to drinking water
  • Functional cooling spaces
  • Uninterrupted power supply

Citizens are encouraged to follow updates via the IMD’s official platforms and apps like Mausam, and to look out for those at higher risk in their communities.

Bottom Line

Heatwaves are a seasonal reality—but with awareness, small lifestyle adjustments, and community care, their impact can be significantly reduced.
