CHENNAI, FEB 24

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) successfully hosted Asia’s First Global Hyperloop Competition (GHC) from February 21st to 24th, 2025, bringing together some of the brightest minds and leading experts in the field of Hyperloop technology. The landmark event marked a significant step toward making India the global hub for Hyperloop research, innovation, and commercialization.

A Convergence of Global Expertise: The Delegate Conference

The competition opened with a two-day conference, featuring discussions among 60 leading delegates, including Hyperloop industry pioneers, automotive and aerospace engineers, industrial designers from NID, and researchers from top global institutions. Experts from the UK, Turkey, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and the USA explored potential collaborations, technology exchange, and industry synergies to accelerate the development of Hyperloop technology.

  • We will sanction a third grant to IIT Madras for the commercialization of Hyperloop technology & also plan on the implementation of a 40 – 50 km corridor in India: Railway Minister
  • The Demonstration Category featured teams showcasing working Hyperloop pod prototypes, undergoing rigorous safety checks before presenting live runs to an audience and the expert panel
  • The overall winner of the Demonstration Category was LoopMIT from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal

The sessions focused on how different technology stacks from participating companies could complement one another, and what lessons could be drawn from the automotive and aerospace industries. Students also had the opportunity to interact with global Hyperloop leaders, exchanging ideas and insights into the future of high-speed transportation.

Student Competition: Showcasing Innovation & Talent

A major highlight of the event was the Hyperloop student competition, which saw participation from nine teams across three categories—Demonstration, DesignX, and Innoquest. With over 180+ students from India and abroad, the competition provided a platform for young innovators to present their designs, simulations, and prototypes to a distinguished jury comprising professors from IITs, IISc, and NITs, as well as senior experts from the automotive and rail industries.

The Demonstration Category featured teams showcasing working Hyperloop pod prototypes, undergoing rigorous safety checks before presenting live runs to an audience and the expert panel. The event was preceded by a thorough evaluation process, where teams submitted detailed documentation, progressively reviewed by the jury.

  • The overall winner of the Demonstration Category was LoopMIT from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal.
  • A special mention award was given to Team Nirmaan from Thakur College of Engineering and Technology, Mumbai.

Railway Minister’s Address & Future Prospects

In a major boost to Hyperloop development in India, Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Railway Board addressed the gathering through Virtual Conference during the closing ceremony, congratulating IIT Madras, the participating student teams, and the industry experts.

Recognizing the tremendous potential of Hyperloop technology in transforming transportation, the Railway Minister made a historic announcement, stating: “We will sanction a third grant to IIT Madras for the commercialization of Hyperloop technology & also plan on the implementation of a 40 – 50 km corridor in India.” This announcement further reinforces India’s position as a leader in next-generation mobility, providing the necessary push toward large-scale Hyperloop deployment.

Industry-Academia Partnership: The Role of IIT Madras & Indian Railways

IIT Madras, in collaboration with Indian Railways, has been actively working toward Hyperloop technology development along with TuTr Hyperloop, a deep-tech startup incubated at IIT Madras. IIT Madras along with Indian Railways are set to announce some projects at Kolkata Metro, Nilgiri Mountains, etc and are set to commence within the next two months, reaffirming the Government of India’s commitment to pioneering future mobility solutions under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
