R ARIVANANTHAM
‘Thittam Irandu ‘and ‘Adiyae’ fame Vignesh Karthick’s 4-in-one documentary film raises more heat and dust on man-woman relationship blaming men for all evils. It has received an A certificate from the CBFC. The director claims that he has made a socially responsible film and the intention behind the cultural shock provided in the trailer is noble.
Produced by KJ Balamanimarbhan and Suresh Kumar under the banner of KJB Talkies and 7 Warrior Films. This film reminds us of National Poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar’s golden words on equality of women in
“மாதர் தம்மை இழிவு செய்யும்
மடமையைக் கொளுத்துவோம்
வைய வாழ்வு தன்னிலெந்த
வகையினும் நமக்குள்ளே
தாதரென்ற நிலைமை மாறி
ஆண்களோடு பெண்களும்
சரி நிகர் சமானமாக
வாழ்வமிந்த நாட்டிலே…….(மாதர்)”
Today’s changing economic environment has brought about changes in many things like friendship between men and women, love and feminism. These changes are both good and bad. The movie ‘Hot Spot’ has come to tell both sides. The film comes in four separate stories. While the first three are on men-women relationships the fourth one is on abuse of children by pushing them to indulge in reality shows for name and fame. This falls in alignment with Chinna Kalaivanar late Vivek’s clarion call that exploitation of children during their formative years is not good for the society.

Trailer:
First story
The film begins with an assistant director narrating a story to a filmmaker. A young man inspired by the ideas of EVR Periyar and Dr Ambedkar puts a condition on his future wife’s family. He says that after getting married, he will go to his wife’s house permanently, further both men and women are equal.
It is a collection of absurdities like a man tying a ‘thali’ (mangalsutra) in the name of femininity and behaving like a woman in the house.
Second story
A man and a woman are passionately in love. When they decide to get married, it becomes clear that both of them are siblings. What these two decide to do is another story.
Third story
A young man who loses his job due to his disgusting actions decides to use his body to make money in the wrong way. At some point, this young man’s girlfriend comes to know of this. What happens after this is the third story.
The second and third stories make us worry if such things are happening in our society.
Fourth story
A poverty-stricken auto driver gets his daughter to participate in a celebrity TV contest. The girl dies mysteriously. The girl’s father blames the reality show organisers for her death. This is the fourth story.
This story clearly shows how much reality shows inflict mental violence on children. Only this fourth story speaks more closely to the mind and the awareness we need to gain. This part reiterates Comedian Vivek’s socio consciousness that children’s world is unique one. ‘Don’t see them as media merchandise’ is a loud warning to the society at large.
These four stories do not meet at any point or intersection. So it feels like four shorts instead of one full-length movie. Still somewhat interesting as they reflect the present-day happenings to create awareness among masses.
The actors fit perfectly in their respective stories. Aditya Bhaskar in the first story and Kalaiyarasan in the fourth story have also acted very well. In the scene where Kalaiyarasan is crying, it feels like our child is affected.
Ammu Abhirami and Sandy Master convey a great romance. Kalaiyarasan’s wife has given a good performance.
There are some flaws in this film. However, in this hectic life, ‘Hot Spot’ helps us to relax and look at what is happening around us.
