In a joint anti-smuggling operation by Indian Coast Guard and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), one fishing boat along with 2 personnel were apprehended on Tuesday (March 3) at Mandapam, near Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
Further, on Wednesday (March 4), Coast Guard Hovercraft H-197 and Interceptor Craft IC-114 undertook diving operations at sea in the Gulf of Mannar and recovered one cloth package containing 5 black packs and same was brought ashore.
On investigation, it was established to be approximately 15 kgs gold worth Rs 6.3 Crores at prevailing market rates. The same has been handed over to DRI officials for further legal formalities, a release from Defence PRO said.
