The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) officials carried out a successful medical evacuation of an Indian crew at around 200 kms from Porbandar. The patient had got his right hand index finger severed and required urgent medical attention, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Sub Centre, Porbandar, it received a call about Medical Emergency from Merchant Vessel Helen on Tuesday at 10 pm. The Panama flagged vessel was at approximately 200 Kms from Porbandar, transiting from Sikka to Durban, South Africa, requested medical evacuation for one Indian crew, 29, whose right hand index finger was severed.
The Indian Coast Guard Interceptor Boat C-161 was immediately sailed out and proceeded with high speed to establish rendezvous with the Merchant Vessel in the wee hours of Wednesday. The patient was safely evacuated and provided with preliminary medical aid on the Coast Guard Interceptor Boat whilst enroute to Porbandar. On reaching Porbandar at early morning hours, the patient was handed over to local agent for further management.
