The Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East), Chennai on Sunday announced that one of its Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) has recovered a Tsunami Data Buoy.

A Tsunami Data Buoy of National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) was drifting from its moored position 255 nautical miles (Approx.) East of Chennai, amidst deteriorating weather during cyclone ‘Asani’. Informed by the NIOT on  May 11, 2022, the Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East), Chennai deployed an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Shaunak’ for recovery of the Buoy.

Amidst adverse weather and sea conditions the Indian Coast Guard ship Shaunak located and recovered the drifting buoy at 278 Nm East of Chennai. The Tsunami buoy was handed over to NIOT at Chennai harbour on Sunday, May 15, 2022. These moored buoys are equipped with sensors, GPS, beacon light and satellite trans-receiver. They collect and transmit oceanographic and meteorological data for providing critical information on Tsunami and Cyclone hazards.
